A new survey conducted by agentic AI pentesting firm Ethiack claims to have found that 19% of the web servers used by UK telecoms firms “leave crucial security information in plain sight that offers a “roadmap” to cybercriminals“. But it’s not always quite as bad as they’re making out in the headline claim.

UK ISP CommunityFibre, which has invested c.£1bn to build a 5Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across 1.342 million homes (inc. 185k businesses within 200 metres of their network) – mostly in London, has temporarily doubled the speed of their £12.50 per month “Essentials” social tariff from 35Mbps to 70Mbps (symmetric).

Business telecommunications and UK broadband ISP Spitfire (Spitfire Network Services) has today launched a live honeypot attack map, which it claims reveals the scale of automated cyberattacks targeting public IP addresses (e.g. it recorded 71,000+ attacks against a single public IP in just the last 24 hours).

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has issued a second announcement today to confirm that the previously stalled Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for North Shropshire (Lot 25.02), which was originally held by Freedom Fibre until they “mutually agreed to descope the remaining 8,500 premises” in June 2025 (here), has also been taken on by Openreach (BT).

In a somewhat expected development, the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has confirmed that the previously stalled Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for West Herefordshire and the Forest of Dean (Lot 15), which was originally held by FullFibre Limited until they “mutually agreed to terminate” it in May 2025 (here), has been taken on by Openreach (BT).

The Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper) service, which is in the process of launching a new mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the UK and globally, has launched a new Aviation Antenna that it says will deliver reliable internet connectivity to airline passengers and crew with up to 1Gbps download and 400Mbps upload speeds.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has published the results from a recent survey they conducted into mobile network coverage and mobile broadband (4G, 5G) speed across Caerphilly in Wales, which involved two surveys over an 18-month period and revealed a strong post-merger boost for Vodafone and Three UK (VodafoneThree). On the flip side, O2 actually suffered a decline.

Merged mobile operator VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) has begun the process of transforming its UK retail estate, which will see the operator combining stores across the country and closing those that duplicate their presence. The expected move will also result in Three UK becoming available in over 130 new locations.

Digital UK home phone provider Phonely, which operates a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service and also works with some broadband ISPs, has introduced a new feature that provides free Phonely-to-Phonely calls between customers. The move is said to be in response to “growing concerns that rising landline costs may discourage vulnerable users from staying connected“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has this morning launched an additional technical consultation to support their recent decision to allow low power indoor WiFi signals and outdoor mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) networks to “share” access to the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz). The key focus this time is on how they’ll define “high density areas” for mobile licences.

The incumbent broadband and telecoms provider for Hull, KCOM, which has also built their full fibre (FTTP) network across other parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), have published their annual accounts to 31st March 2025 and revealed a huge c. £530m write down in the value of their assets. The results give context to the company’s new capital restructuring deal.

Debt strained internet provider TalkTalk, which is currently trying to sell off its various divisions again (here), is being sued by another financially strained company, Ovo Energy, following a 2022 deal that saw the ISP acquire Ovo’s base of 135,000 (approximately) former SSE Phone & Broadband customers for an undisclosed sum (here and here).

German supermarket giant Lidl (Schwarz Group) has reportedly announced plans to launch its own mobile (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service in a number of other markets later this year, which could eventually reach up to 30 countries including the UK, US, France and Spain etc.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has notified suppliers (network operators) to its £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme that they will, from 14th April 2026, be required to provide more details of the reasons for removing homes / premises (UPRNs) from the scope of an existing deployment contract.
