The High Court has approved a new injunction that forces all of the major broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, EE and TalkTalk) into blocking their customers from being able to view several websites that host a BitTorrent-fuelled video streaming app called Popcorn Time, plus a few other piracy sites.

The results from the annual Broadband Genie 2015 survey have been announced, which saw PlusNet come top in four of the five survey categories (overall satisfaction score of 76%) to secure the Best Broadband Provider award. But Virgin Media (75%) and Sky Broadband (73%) weren’t far behind.

The county of Hampshire in England can celebrate after it recently became the latest Broadband Delivery UK based Government programme with BT to complete its target of ensuring that 90% of homes and businesses can access “superfast” Internet download speeds of 24Mbps+ by the end of 2015.

The impending acquisition of EE by BT isn’t putting a dampener on the operators growth, with their latest Q1-2015 results showing a +50k increase in fixed line home broadband subscribers to total 884,000 (the best growth yet; up from +41k in Q4 2014, +18k in Q3-2014 and +30k in Q2-2014). Meanwhile 4G coverage and uptake is also booming.

New customers of TalkTalk’s entry-level SimplyBroadband bundle look set to be the worst hit today as their standard monthly rental price shoots up by 42.86% from £3.50 to £5 per month, with most of the ISPs other bundles and TV packages also experiencing a +£1.50 per month rise in the cost of service.

An unknown number of websites who use the popular CloudFlare Content Delivery Network (CDN) are finding that UK customers of Sky Broadband cannot view their content because one or more of the IP addresses that Sky blocks as part of their court ordered anti-piracy censorship tool includes an IP that’s shared with the CDN.

Back in March we reported that BTOpenreach’s roll-out of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology, which can improve the performance of their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines, had hit a few snags (here) with some customers losing performance, connectivity and or suffering higher latency.

Who? A strange and unexpected press release just crossed our desk, which stems from a company in the Netherlands that we’ve not heard of before, Angie Communications. Essentially they plan to “aggressively” rollout a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 3 million premises and make “4.5G” and 5G mobile broadband available to 95% and 90% of the UK respectively by 2021.

A new RootMetrics study has attempted to identify the fastest UK Mobile Broadband operators for travellers making use of London City Airport (LCY). Unsurprisingly EE came top, delivering the fastest median download and upload speeds at 16.1Mbps and 26.2Mbps respectively.

Budget ISP PlusNet seems to be in the news a lot this week and today is no exception with the broadband provider recently announcing that, over the next year and a half, it would create an additional 200 jobs in Yorkshire (England). Eeh by gum.

The Cotswolds Broadband project, which last year tendered for a supplier to help roll-out a 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the majority of homes and businesses in West Oxfordshire (England), now looks set to begin building the network by September 2015.

After a few last minutes problems the community co-operative Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project has officially started the build-phase for their new 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which will serve 580 premises in the rural villages of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England).

The annual Global Connectivity Index from Huawei, which claims to offer a quantitative assessment of connectivity and its value from both national and industrial perspectives, reports that the United Kingdom has dropped to 5th place due to weaknesses with “low cable infrastructure” and rural Mobile Broadband coverage.

The ITS Technology Group, which manages and builds various superfast wireless and fixed line broadband networks (East Manchester, Hammersmith and Fulham etc.), claims that their move to push faster Internet connectivity into digitally deprived urban business parks has seen success with 500 new firms signing up in a very short space of time.

It’s been around two years since we first heard of PlusNet’s plan to launch a YouView (IPTV) based TV service for their broadband customers, yet the good news is that the official product “will be launching soon“. But it will only be available to their “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) subscribers.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that the average 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband download speeds on their network are now reaching 17.8Mbps (up from 10.7Mbps in December 2014) and that the roll-out of Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) and low frequency 800MHz spectrum will begin during September 2015.
