We often report in gripes with rural broadband connectivity from across the United Kingdom but spare a thought for the 3,400 people living on the largely self-governing and self-sufficient Falkland Islands, where all of the fixed line services and mobile networks are still supplied by a limited Satellite data link.

The latest 2019 State of Mobile Network report from Opensignal has ranked the United Kingdom 27th out of 87 countries in the world for its average Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) download speed (21.7Mbps), as well as 30th for upload speeds (7.4Mbps), 29th for latency times (46ms) and 26th for 4G network availability (84.7%).

The UK High Court of Justice has ruled that Ofcom must pay back £220m to mobile operators as part of restitution for the regulator’s handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G and 4G) spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54.4m for Vodafone, £54.4m for O2 and £26.9m for Three UK).

Customers of Virgin Media’s (Virgin Mobile) EE powered mobile network (MVNO) platform are suffering a major outage today, which appears to be preventing many of them from making calls, sending texts or accessing data (mobile broadband) connectivity.

A new study has ranked the top 20 cities across the United Kingdom by comparing their fixed line broadband coverage, performance and 4G mobile network availability in order to produce an index score. Overall London came out as being the UK’s “best digitally connected city,” albeit mainly thanks to its mobile coverage.

Fixed line ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has released their latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q4 FY19), which saw them add another 50,000 fixed broadband customers (up from +46K in the previous quarter) to total 575,000. Plus they’ve announced the 3rd July 2019 launch of their UK 5G network.

Mobile operators EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK have confirmed a new agreement that could help to boost the rural coverage of their 2G, 3G, 4G and future 5G networks. Under the deal a new infrastructure company will be established to help build masts in remote areas. Now they just need Ofcom to agree.

The trade association for mobile operators, Mobile UK, has warned that many councils currently adopt an “inconsistent” approach to improving mobile connectivity and fixed line broadband is often given a higher priority. Instead the group wants local authorities to take the future roll-out of ultrafast 5G networks more seriously.

The National Audit Office (NAO) has today issued a damning report into the Home Office’s handling of the new 4G (EE) based Emergency Services Network (ESN), which will now cost a total of £9.3bn (£3.1bn more than forecast in 2015) and it will be July 2029 before the financial benefits outweigh its costs (7 years late).

Some customers of the Tesco Mobile network appear to be flooding the operator’s Twitter feed with complaints about a loss of 4G and 3G based data (mobile broadband) connectivity, which appears to have started more than 24 hours ago and remains on-going today.

Ofcom has published a Spring 2019 update to last year’s Connected Nations 2018 report, which uses more recent data to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. The key change is that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 7% (i.e. over 300K premises in the last 4 months, nearly 1.8 million total).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a new range of “Smart” 4G plans for Pay Monthly customers that come with the UK’s first “swappable benefits” (comprised of the Video Pass, Music Pass, access to the BT Sport app and Extended roaming), as well as the first “lifetime smartphone warranty” from a network.

A complaint by JT (Jersey Telecom) has prompted the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban a “misleading” Facebook and website advert for mobile operator Sure, which claimed to be both “Jersey’s fastest mobile network” (mobile broadband) and also “officially the fastest in the Channel Islands.”

A new cross-party report from the House of Lords Select Committee on the Rural Economy has warned that rural communities across the UK are still being “ignored and underrated,” with many still suffering from poor fixed line broadband ISP and mobile network connectivity. But they also recommend some possible solutions.
