Over the weekend it was reported that the BBC were about to deploy new technology that could capture information from your broadband based home WiFi network and “sniff out” any TV Licence fee dodgers watching iPlayer content online. You probably shouldn’t be worried.

Ofcom’s long running probe into the rising cost of Premier League TV rights (football, rugby etc.), which was started by Virgin Media in 2014 and followed frustration over the impact of a bidding war between BT and Sky (Sky Broadband), has today been closed. But a few positive tweaks are coming.

Sky has today published their latest Q2 2016 (calendar) results, which reveals that they added +24,000 new Sky Broadband subscribers in the UK and Ireland during the quarter to total 5.964 million (sharply down from +46K in Q1 and +144K in Q4 2015). But the operator still has a lot to celebrate.

BT has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q2 2016), which saw their total base of retail broadband customers top 9,117,000 (up by +76K in Q2 vs 1.045m in Q1) and 4,257,000 of those make use of their FTTC/P based Infinity superfast broadband service (up by +181K vs +214k in Q1).

Vodafone has posted their latest results to 30th June 2016 (Q2 calendar), which shows that they added +28,000 new fixed line broadband customers in the quarter to total 137,000 (up from the +20k added in Q1 and +14k in Q4 2015) and improved their UK outdoor 4G cover to 95% (Ofcom’s definition).

Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally confirmed that their new Sky Q range of TV, phone and broadband bundles will from 13th August 2016 finally be able to benefit from Ultra HD (4K) TV content, which will apparently deliver the “UK’s most comprehensive Ultra HD service.”

New and existing customers of EE’s pay monthly and SIM-only mobile plans can now benefit from 6 months of free access to the BTSport TV app (£5 a month thereafter), which is no doubt a benefit that has been extracted from the recent £12.5bn merger between the two. Just watch your data usage.

Sky’s sibling Internet video streaming service, NOW TV, has today announced “the UK’s first ever contract-free triple play bundle” that includes unlimited broadband and phone (voice call) services, with prices starting from just £9.99 per month + £17.99 line rental.

Subscribers who take one of TalkTalk’s broadband, TV (YouView), phone and or mobile bundles may be displeased to learn that the ISP’s Entertainment Package of premium television will lose six of its channels from 30th June 2016, including some big names like the ‘Discovery Channel’.

Telecoms operator BT has announced that their premium BTSport TV channels will be streamed live via YouTube. On top of that any customers who take EE’s 4GEE pay monthly mobile plans will also be given access to the content, with details and pricing due to be revealed this summer.

Customers of TalkTalk’s broadband based TV service may be pleased to learn that the premium BTSport content will be available to them from June 2016, which means that they’ll be able to subscribe to the related TV channels on a rolling monthly contract directly from BT.

BT has released its latest Q1 2016 results (calendar), which reveals that their retail division has a total of 9,041,000 broadband subscribers (up by +1.045 million in Q1 vs +130K in Q4 2015) and 4.076m of those are taking their FTTC/P based BTInfinity superfast broadband service (up by +214k vs +250K at the end of 2015).

Mobile giant EE (BT) has formed a new alliance with several other operators, including Verizon (USA), Telstra (Australia) and kt (South Korea), in order to facilitate the development of LTE-Broadcast (LTE-B) technology that enables operators to send a single stream of data to all mobile users in one area.

Sky has published their latest results to the end of Q1 2016 (calendar), which reveals that the total number of Sky Broadband subscribers in the UK and Ireland increased by just +46,000 in the quarter to total approx. 5.94 million (down sharply from the +144K added in Q4 2015 and +133k in Q3).

Netflix UK, the broadband-based unlimited movie and TV video streaming service, has informed older customers that their special legacy subscription price of £5.99 per month will shortly be increased to £7.49.
