Internet providers across the United Kingdom saw a surge in data traffic on Sunday evening as Netflix, the online movie and TV streaming giant, released all 13 episodes of the latest ‘House of Cards‘ series at once. Sunday is always the busiest day of the week for related traffic on TalkTalk, but this one was a record breaker.

The on-going war between BT and Sky over broadband and TV content took another expensive leap today after both operators splashed a record amount of cash in order to retain their hold over vital Premier League TV football rights for the 2016/17 to 2018/19 seasons.

The broadband based YouView video-on-demand and catch-up TV (IPTV) service, which is being bundled by a number of ISPs (e.g. BT and TalkTalk) in the United Kingdom and can also be brought separately at retail, has officially branched out into the integrated TV market with Sony’s new 2015 BRAVIA range becoming the first to benefit.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has predictably followed last year’s similar move by BT (here) and made the popular Netflix Internet TV and Movie streaming service available to owners of their YouView (IPTV) based platform, with those who pre-registered for the service being first in line to receive it on their set-top-box.

As predicted last week TalkTalk has this morning confirmed the acquisition of Tesco’s Blinkbox Movies (video streaming) business, but in a more surprising move they’ve also gobbled the supermarket giants budget fixed line broadband (75,000 subs) and phone (20,000 subs) customers. Apparently the assets have been acquired free of debt and as a single transaction for cash.

At least part of Sky’s (Sky Broadband) popular Internet-based NOW TV service, which offers a mix of premium TV, Sport and Movie content (including live channels) delivered via broadband, could vanish from BT and TalkTalk’s TV services unless the native YouView platform can be adapted to support live TV channel streaming.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk seems keen to build on their existing YouView (IPTV) based TV platform and part of that on-going effort now looks set to include the possible acquisition of Blinkbox from supermarket giant Tesco, which has been suffering from a mountain of financial trouble. Meanwhile Vodafone’s early interest has waned.

As expected the United Kingdom’s communications and media regulator has today opened a new consultation into regulation of the Pay TV market, which will predominantly focus on BT and Sky’s (Sky Broadband) impact on sports content (e.g. Premier League football) and will also examine the related impact of new broadband based delivery methods (e.g. NOW TV, Netflix etc.).

Budget ISP Fuel Broadband (formerly Primus Saver) has moved to make their existing offer, which is promoting 12 months of free unlimited broadband (up to 16Mbps) with included UK weekend and evening calls (normally £4 per month), even more attractive by throwing Google’s Chromecast video streaming device into the mix.

Customers of BT’s broadband powered YouView TV (IPTV) service can, following the operators successful application for interim relief at the Competition Appeal Tribunal, now get access to the Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 channels alongside their existing BTSport, ESPN and Eurosport content. The move also means no more BTVision+ boxes.

Internet providers will no doubt be keeping a careful watch of Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service after the company announced that members will soon be able to take advantage of the high-quality 4K (Ultra HD – 3840 x 2160 pixels) picture resolution of movies and TV shows on their service “at no additional cost” (rivals often charge a premium for it).

Netflix, the Internet Movie and TV video streaming giant, has just published their latest ISP Speed Index update for the United Kingdom and revealed that Virgin Media comes top of the performance table with an average speed of 3.49Mbps (Megabits per second).

8th December, 2014 (12 Comments)

Oh no, not again. Once more customers of Virgin Media’s cable broadband service across the United Kingdom have spent the best part of the weekend having to complain after the curse of buffering on Internet video streams returned to strike down the entertainment value of services like YouTube (Google) etc.

BT has announced that customers of their broadband TV (IPTV) platform, specifically those who make use of their Buy-to-Keep movies service, will now be able to access the content they purchase on more than the ISPs Set-Top-Box hardware. In addition, customers can now also watch their TV channels on multiple devices but you’ll need an ‘Extra Box’.

In another entirely unsurprising development it’s been reported that Vodafone are seeking to enhance and possibly extend their existing relationship with BSkyB (Sky Broadband) by potentially bundling Sky’s NOW TV streaming service alongside their forthcoming Home Broadband product, which is anticipated to surface during spring 2015.

Opera Software, which is perhaps best known for their web browser of the same name, have moved to help Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) customers and operators to better manage their data allowances and network capacity by adding a new technology that optimises video streaming via the Opera Mini 9 Browser for iOS devices (iPhone and iPad).
