Cable broadband and TV operator Virgin Media has this week begun sending out “confidential” invites to what appears to be their first official customer trial of the IPv6 internet addressing standard, which until now has only been tested internally by the company’s staff (plus the occasional unexpected subscriber).

A new study conducted by the Open Rights Group has claimed that around 37% of court ordered website blocks in the UK, which are often enforced by large broadband providers against copyright infringing websites (internet piracy), are done in error and being “improperly administrated by ISPs and rights holders.”

The European Commission has publish their 2018 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2017 and 2018 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress toward the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). A couple of months ago we reported that Virgin Media was facing 14 alleged safety breaches in the Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, which related to the expansion of their cable broadband and TV network in Cumbria. This week the ISP admitted to seven offences and was fined £385,000.

The Scottish Government‘s Connectivity Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has this week launched a new “Up Your Street” campaign that aims to promote more take-up of the country’s hybrid fibre (FTTC / Cable) dominated fixed line broadband services, which can reach nearly 97% of homes and businesses across Scotland.

The rumour mill has burst into full swing this morning with reports that UK ISPs Virgin Media and TalkTalk are tentatively exploring the possibility of passive infrastructure sharing, which could enable the budget provider to lay their fibre optic lines in Virgin’s cable ducts and vice versa.

Ofcom has published their annual study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds across the United Kingdom, which reveals that the average download rate has risen from 36.2Mbps last year to 46.2Mbps now, while uploads hit 6.2Mbps (up from 4.3Mbps). Sadly the gap between urban and rural areas persists.

Cable provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which saw them add +31,200 broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 5,135,500 (up from the +24K added in Q4 2017) and extend their cable network to another 111,000 UK premises.

Cable broadband operator Virgin Media has announced that it is to cut 772 jobs (including 220 roles from SITEL) by shutting its call centre in Llansamlet (Swansea, Wales), which is expected to complete by the autumn of 2019. The good news is that most of these will be shifted to elsewhere in the UK.

Ofcom has published their annual study of service quality, call waiting times, complaints and service provision among the largest UK ISPs and Mobile operators, which among other things found that Plusnet had the longest call waiting times (7:50 mins) and the highest broadband satisfaction (86%).

Cable ISP Virgin Media has continued their piecemeal announcements by revealing that 10,000 premises in Cleckheaton (Kirklees, West Yorkshire) will be the next to benefit from the expansion of their cable TV and 350Mbps capable broadband network, which forms part of ‘Project Lightning‘.
