Supermarket giant Tesco has moved to paint over some of their financial troubles by announcing that customers who shop in their Tesco Extra or Superstores across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland will now be able to get online via premium WiFi hotspots from BT.

A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.

The ITS Technology Group will soon deploy a new superfast fixed wireless broadband service to cover businesses on Derby’s (East Midlands, England) Pride Park, which can be found on the outskirts of the city centre (former industrial land between the River Derwent and railway lines).

In an unexpected move Virgin Media has today announced a new partnership deal with The Cloud, which is owned by rival BSkyB (Sky Broadband), that allows the national cable operator access to 22,000 additional premium public WiFi hotspots across the United Kingdom.

BT has successfully deployed a “free and unlimited” public WiFi wireless Internet hotspot service in the heart of Carlisle (i.e. most of the city centre and Longtown) in Cumbria (England), which will be extended to include Brampton later this month.

Virgin Media has announced that its UK network of public WiFi Hotspots have been expanded again to cover a total of 150 London Underground Tube stations. Apparently commuters who make use of the underground WiFi network (over 2.5 million devices are registered to use the service) gobble more than 3TB (TeraBytes) of data every single day.

If the answer is “Yes” then you might be pleased to know that this will now also entitle you to get free WiFi access at any of The Cloud’s (BSkyB) 22,000 hotspots in the United Kingdom, although for the moment this only appears to benefit those who travel in and around London.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has conducted a new study of 2,000 British adults that attempts to collate the sometimes poor performance of standard home broadband connections with the finding that 39% of respondents admitted to using their neighbours’ Internet connection by “stealing” their WiFi, which might be partly out of frustration with their own slow connections.

A new study of 8,556 employed adults across 25 countries, which was conducted by the Canadian division of online travel giant Expedia, has found that travellers increasingly prioritise WiFi accessibility. Some 56% of travellers worldwide said that WiFi availability and pricing impact their purchasing decision when booking travel or hotels.
