Broadband Forum has released its latest global broadband and IPTV (Internet TV) statistics for Q1-2009, which were sourced from Point Topic data. The data shows that broadband lines grew by 16.6 million during the first quarter, bringing the worldwide total to a staggering 429.2 million. Happily the UK managed to retain its 6th position in the

Despite some contrary predictions - today's Digital Britain report has seen the government giving its official approval to a new Universal Service Commitment (USC), which aims to make broadband speeds of 2Mbps available to everybody in the UK by 2012. This will be delivered through "

The final Digital Britain report has put forward several new legislative measures to help curb unlawful P2P (Peer 2 Peer) file-sharing downloads among UK broadband ISP users. These include notification of unlawful activity (ISP warning letters) and, for repeat-infringers, a court-based process of identity release and civil action. ISPs will also be required to enforce
technical measures upon users, such as "
bandwidth reduction or protocol blocking", but only as a last resort.

Tariam UK has announced a substantial performance increase for its domestic

Broadband ISP PlusNet has become the latest provider to announce its involvement with next month’s first trials of BT's next generation Fibre to the Cabinet ( FTTC ) up to 40Mbps broadband technology. Federation Against Software Theft and Investors in Software (FAST IiS) has launched an attack on the government's suggestion that illegal downloader’s could face reductions in their broadband speed instead of being cut-off from their ISP (

Independent broadband provider Zen Internet has just become the latest ISP to announce the introduction of faster services with download speeds of up to 20Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1Mbps at no extra cost for both new and existing customers this summer. The services will be based off elements of BT's new 21st Century Network (21CN) and ADSL2+ broadband technology (BT aims to cover 55% of homes and businesses by March 2010).
