Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which compiles and maintains business rating and council tax valuation lists for England and Wales, is reportedly getting ready to impose business rates (property tax) upon wireless networks (e.g. wi-fi masts, not end-user networks). The move has raised concern because many community wireless broadband ( Wi-Fi , WiMAX ) ISPs operate off already thin margins and usually inhabit niche markets (remote and rural areas).

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 30th September 2009. The group’s broadband service saw another decline in quarterly uptake by adding +100,000 new customers, which compares with +164,000 for the same time last year. European Parliament appears to have surrendered to pressure from Member States by abandoning amendment 138, a provision adopted on two occasions by an 88% majority of the plenary assembly, and which aimed to protect citizens' right to Internet access. The move paves the way for an EU wide policy supporting arbitrary restrictions of Internet access, such as customers being cut-off from the Internet by their ISP.

UK ISP Entanet says that new proposals by Ofcom to curb mis-selling (i.e. slamming) in the telecoms industry do not go far enough and is calling on the regulator to ensure that the rules are strictly enforced or face the prospect of continued malpractice. Broadband ISP TalkTalk has published the results from a new survey into 1,083 UK wireless network connections. It found that 5% were completely open (no security), 36% used WEP (easily hackable), 56% used WPA which is currently fairly secure but not perfect and only 3% used the best WPA2. This equates to 7m homes and businesses that are vulnerable to hijacking and, under new anti-piracy proposals, at risk of being wrongly disconnected from the Internet.
