The Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which compiles and maintains business rating and council tax valuation lists for England and Wales, is reportedly getting ready to impose business rates (property tax) upon wireless networks (e.g. wi-fi masts, not end-user networks). The move has raised concern because many community wireless broadband ( Wi-Fi , WiMAX ) ISPs operate off already thin margins and usually inhabit niche markets (remote and rural areas).

Broadband ISP ADSL24 UK has launched a bonded 48Mbps downstream (5Mbps upstream) service based off unbundled ( LLU ) ADSL2+ technology, which links two 'up to' 24Mbps capable telephone lines together to double the speed (12 month contract term).

Newark-based business ISP Timico has achieved 7th position in the highly regarded Deloitte Technology Fast 50, which ranks the top 50 fastest growing technology companies in the UK. The same provider also recently achieved a top 25 position in the Sunday Times Microsoft Tech Track 100 index.

The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk Group ), which finally acquired broadband ISP Tiscali for £236m during the summer, could be facing legal action after a heap of Tiscali's Milton Keynes and Stevenage technical managers were told they might face redundancy.

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 30th September 2009. The group’s broadband service saw another decline in quarterly uptake by adding +100,000 new customers, which compares with +164,000 for the same time last year. Some 17% of Sky's customers now choose the operator for all three of TV, broadband and telephony.

UK ISP PlusNet has become the latest provider this week to launch a new range of packages with faster ADSL2+ based broadband speeds of 'up to' 20Mbps. The enhancements mean that the popular 'Pro' package will get a speed boost and a usage allowance increase to 20GB. A brand new 'Premium' package has also surfaced with an 80GB peak time usage allowance from just £11.99 per month.

The UK government could be about to water down its proposals to tackle repeated illegal p2p broadband file sharing by automatically disconnecting "suspected" abusers from their ISP. New comments made by the Culture Secretary, Ben Bradshaw, state that "there would need to be a court order for any of the technical measures" and a right to appeal.

The European Parliament appears to have surrendered to pressure from Member States by abandoning amendment 138, a provision adopted on two occasions by an 88% majority of the plenary assembly, and which aimed to protect citizens' right to Internet access. The move paves the way for an EU wide policy supporting arbitrary restrictions of Internet access, such as customers being cut-off from the Internet by their ISP.

UK ISP Entanet says that new proposals by Ofcom to curb mis-selling (i.e. slamming) in the telecoms industry do not go far enough and is calling on the regulator to ensure that the rules are strictly enforced or face the prospect of continued malpractice. Ofcom launched a new consultation on the matter in September (here), although this may not be enough.

Business ISP Easynet Connect UK (BSkyB) has announced the launch of its new 8Mbps SureStream SDSL (symmetric - same speed for upload and downloads) 1:1 uncontended broadband service for small businesses. The service costs £399 +vat per month and is claimed to be 50% cheaper than comparable services from BT ; contract length is also just 1 year in comparison to BT's 3-5 years.

The pan European association of European Internet Services Providers (EuroISPA) has joined consumer groups, La Quadrature du Net and numerous other NGOs to urge the European Parliament not to give up the fundamental rights of EU citizens and support amendment 138. Failing to do so could lead to an EU wide policy supporting arbitrary restrictions of Internet access, such as customers being cut-off from the Internet by their ISP.

UK ISP Orange has quietly revamped its Internet deal prices and increased its unbundled ( LLU ) broadband package speeds from 'up to' 8Mbps to 20Mbps ( ADSL2+ ). Customers who already have a mobile phone contract with the operator will, as before, also be able to take advantage of some special lower price discounts.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has published the results from a new survey into 1,083 UK wireless network connections. It found that 5% were completely open (no security), 36% used WEP (easily hackable), 56% used WPA which is currently fairly secure but not perfect and only 3% used the best WPA2. This equates to 7m homes and businesses that are vulnerable to hijacking and, under new anti-piracy proposals, at risk of being wrongly disconnected from the Internet.

It's been a long time coming but UK ISP Zen Internet has finally announced the launch of its faster broadband ADSL2+ based services offering download speeds of 'up to' 20Mbps and upload speeds of 'up to' 1Mbps. Trials of the new service, which makes use of the BT 21st Century Network ( 21CN ) platform, were successfully completed at the end of the summer.

New research from BT Business (2009 Business Pulse), which was conducted with 7200 small and medium sized business (SME) respondents, has revealed that 61% said faster broadband ISP speeds and services have had a positive impact on their business. Better web sites, better e-commerce, remote working and mobile devices were also beneficial.
