Scottish Government and BT have expanded the reach of their rural broadband capacity upgrade scheme. The project, which was originally announced in December 2009 and aimed to improve capacity at 71 largely rural telephone exchanges, has now been expanded to cover a further 8 locations.

Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for January 2010. It shows that the average UK download speed for the largest ten ISPs has dropped since December 2009 (4.478Mbps) and now stands at 4.275Mbps.

Mobile operator Three (3) , which recently announced the activation of its 10,000th 3G site as part of a programme to improve network coverage (
here), has revealed that 96% of its mobile traffic is now data (Internet). In addition the operator claims to have 37% of the UK Mobile Broadband market, though it's unclear whether that figure includes ordinary 3G equipped phones. Improvements to its mobile broadband data performance have also been touted.
