Internet access provider PlusNet, which recently won an ISPA award for customer service (here), has begun offering new customers 3 MONTHS FREE service on any of their Value, Extra or Pro broadband packages, at least until the end of August. Customers need only enter the promotional code treat3 during signup to claim the discount.

Market regulator Ofcom has posted the results from its 2009 Gfk commissioned study into the Quality of Customer Service (QoS) offered to users of broadband, mobile, fixed line and pay TV providers across the UK. It reveals that PRICE is the most dominant consideration when choosing a new communications provider and broadband ISPs have the largest proportion of "Dissatisfied" customers (16%), but only just.

The FTTH Council Europe, which seeks to promote the use and deployment of 100Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) fibre optic broadband services across Europe, has released a promotional video to help present some of the benefits offered by the next generation of "super-fast" internet connections.

Satellite ISP Avanti Communications has revealed that the first of its next generation broadband satellites - HYLAS 1, which will offer internet download speeds of up to 8Mbps to anybody in the UK from £25 per month (more price details), has been delayed by 6 weeks from its original late-September 2010 launch.

Business internet and connectivity solutions provider Timico UK has re-lived the recent 2010 Fifa World Cup experience, at least from a broadband network capacity point of view. Streamed video content uses a lot of bandwidth, which could lead to network congestion and the slow performance of key applications, seriously affecting a business’s day-to-day operations.

ISP Vtesse Broadband UK, the new broadband arm of Vtesse Networks, a national provider of fibre optic networking services, has announced that the next 'Final Third' community to benefit from its "super-fast" broadband internet services will be the rural hamlet Broughton, near Huntingdon in Cambridge Cambridgeshire.

Business ISP Andrews & Arnold ( AAISP ) has become so frustrated by unsolicited calls using auto-diallers and playing recorded marketing messages to their office phone lines, which is illegal because they have been registered under the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), that they have decided to get their own back by trapping any such calls with a recorded message.

The results from 453 respondents to our latest monthly survey have revealed that 61.8% want the UK government to support a roll-out of next generation superfast broadband internet access services to rural areas first (outside-in approach), with just 38.1% voting in favour of the inside-out (urban areas first) solution.

The UK "Champion" for Digital Inclusion and head of the Race Online 2012 initiative, Martha Lane Fox, has said that she will now "attempt to get 100% of the UK population online by the time of the London Olympics [2012]". This represents a significant expansion on the original aim to get only the 4 million most digitally and socially excluded people connected.

The Multimedia Research Group (MRG) has estimated that broadband TV ( IPTV ) services and subscribers, such as BT Vision in the UK, will reach 102 million in 2014, a 25% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). Robust broadband and IPTV investments have been driving growth as a means to meet and outperform Cable Modem ( Virgin Media ) and Satellite ( Sky Broadband ) competition.

ABI Research reports that mobile operators around the world are jumping on the next generation of superfast 4G Mobile Broadband technology - Long Term Evolution ( LTE ). So far 132 networks have reported trials or plans to launch LTE commercially, 32 more than at the end of 2009.

The Project Canvas joint venture, an open standard aiming to deliver UK broadband television services directly into homes via ISPs and IPTV set-top-boxes (STB), has lost one of its key broadcasting partners - Channel FIVE. The TV channel is currently up for sale and is reviewing its digital strategy, which effectively puts its support for Canvas on hiatus.

Popular ISP Be Broadband has launched a new web page that contains a series of 'How-To Guides' based on feedback from its customers. The simple and slightly comical guides claim they can help to "improve the speed of any UK broadband connection". However many of the tips will not work if you are on a cable platform like Virgin Media UK.

Customers of UK business broadband ISP Lixxus have informed ISPreview.co.uk via This Forum Topic that their provider appears to have suddenly and unexpectedly gone bankrupt! Many end-users have thus been left without a service, while others appear to be in a perpetual state of broadband limbo (i.e. still connected but with no idea what is happening). As for Lixxus itself, their website has vanished and the business is now unreachable.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) officially revealed the winners of its 12th annual internet industry awards last night at a black tie dinner in the Grosvenor Marriott Hotel . Be Broadband ( sibling of O2 ) rightly came out top for Best Consumer Fixed Broadband ISP, while FREEDOM4 WiFi took top honours for Best Mobile Broadband.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) and BT have reached agreement on a new pay package for the operators staff. The deal, which has been agreed by the union’s executive, will now be recommended to union members in a consultative ballot. This ballot will take place within the next few weeks.

The UK Secretary of State for Culture, the Olympics Media and Sport (DCMS), Jeremy Hunt (MP for South West Surrey), says he has made "good progress on [his] DCMS manifesto commitments". He claims to have secured enough cash to tackle the country's broadband "not spots" and fund his limited rural superfast broadband pilots.

It's been reported that broadband ISP O2 UK is to tweak the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of its BT-based Home Access package. New customers will now face a soft download restriction of just 20GB (GigaBytes) per month on a supposedly "unlimited" service (currently 40GB). Customers who exceed 20GB on a regular basis could face disconnection. The change will take effect from next Wednesday (14th July).

Hampshire County Council, Havant Borough Council and CommunityUK (CUK) have teamed up to launch a FREE Wi-Fi wireless broadband service for the Leigh Park, Havant area. Unlike other projects of a "similar" nature in the UK, this one really does claim to offer FREE 24/7 access and has taken place without requiring hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment from Government at any level.
