The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today posted a new evaluation of the previous Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), which helped to boost the coverage of “superfast” (24-30Mbps+) ISP networks from c.76% (commercial) to around 97% of premises (i.e. an additional 5.5 million premises) across three phases.

Openreach (BT) has just published a new update to the UK rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which appears to add around 170 new locations (towns and villages) as part of their £15bn project to cover 25 million premises by December 2026.

New UK customers of Openreach’s hybrid fibre G.fast broadband ISP and specific optical fibre (OSEA 6500 Filter Connect and OSEA Lite) products may face delays in getting related services provisioned, which comes after the operator suffered a shortage of electronic components in its supply chain (e.g. modems).

ISP Cuckoo today claims to have become one of the first UK internet providers to launch a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband package based off Openreach’s new “Equinox” discounts, which will see them offer a 1Gbps (gigabit) tier for just £54.99 per month on a 1-month minimum contract term.

UK ISP iDNET has today become the latest broadband provider to start selling Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products to homes and businesses via CityFibre’s growing network, albeit initially only in four of their rollout locations – Derby, Cambridge, Leicester and Peterborough.

Gigaclear’s state aid backed rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Essex, which forms part of the wider Superfast Essex (SFE) project, looks set to suffer another delay due to issues of “contractor resource, the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and the lack of availability of cabinets.”

The Prysmian Group, which specialises in the production of telecoms cables, has signed a 3-year extension deal to support Openreach’s (BT) national £15bn UK rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to reach 25 million premises by December 2026. They’re also testing a new installation method.

Openreach (BT) has apologised after their UK engineers, who were busy building a new “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Clackmannanshire (Scotland), installed a 27ft tall telegraph pole in a private garden without permission, and while the owners were out visiting a dying family member.

A weekend report has claimed that several UK ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone, are still in discussions to join Virgin Media’s (VMO2) long-awaited plans to launch a wholesale product, which could act as a direct competitor to Openreach’s (BT) national network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) are offering a reward of up to £20,000 – via Crimestoppers – for information that results in the conviction of those responsible for a string of copper telecoms (broadband and phone) cable thefts in Essex (England), which have recently plagued parts of Roothing, Epping and Harlow.

Ofcom has today decided to adopt the new ‘One Touch Switch‘ (OTS) process for customers of fixed line phone and broadband ISPs, which will make it easier for you to switch between providers on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to CityFibre or Virgin Media etc.). But you’ll have to wait until April 2023 to use it!

Rural broadband ISP Wildanet, which earlier this year started their £50m rollout (here) of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the Cornwall town of Liskeard (inc. surrounding areas within the PL14 postcode), has confirmed that the next town to benefit will be Callington.
