The i3 Group's Fibrecity project, which is already offering "super-fast" 100Mb Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) fibre optic broadband ISP services in the south coast city of Bournemouth (Dorset), has asked for residents who want to be connected to its next fibre optic network in Dundee (Scotland) to apply now and benefit from a FREE connection.

The latest consumer study from Which? UK, a popular consumer magazine, found that nearly half of those it surveyed (10,000 people) had suffered problems when trying to change broadband provider. Issues such as on-going billing after cancellation, difficulties with establishing the new ISP connection and downtime (more than a few hours without internet access) came top of the gripes.

The Gadget Show, a highly popular TV series that airs at 8pm on UK Channel FIVE each Monday, last night re-launched its long held campaign to have the words "up to" removed from how broadband ISP services in the UK are advertised. The show referenced Ofcom's latest broadband speed study (here), which found that ISPs who advertised "up to 8Mb" actually only delivered an average of 3.3Megabits per second (Mbps).

BT has revealed that its UK telecoms network is now home to 15 Million broadband ISP connections, which is equivalent to adding over 5,000 new subscribers every day since August 2002 when BT had just 200,000. Virgin Media UK is home to the second largest bulk with 3,936,000 (Q2-2010 data) customers on its separate Cable Modem (DOCSIS) platform.

Google's popular video website, YouTube, has teamed up with Blinxbox to offer UK visitors access to a FREE broadband movie streaming service (YouTube Movies), which initially includes 400 full-length films for your viewing pleasure. Sadly most of the films are either very old or simply not very good, which explains why they're free :cheese: .

Office for National Statistics (ONS) has issued its 2010 Internet Access - Households and Individuals report, which reveals that 19.2 million households (73%) now have internet access (18.31m in 2009) and 30.1 million adults use it to go online every day.

Solicitors at Ralli, a national UK law firm, are trying to rally gain support for pursuing Andrew Crossley's rival legal firm ACS:Law as part of a "group action for harassment" suit against their controversial illegal broadband ISP file sharing threat letters. Earlier this week the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) referred ACS:Law to a Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) (here) after it sent "bullying" letters to those it had accused of having abused their internet connections for "illegal" copyright file sharing (p2p) activity.

The introduction of Ofcom's Draft Code of Practice for tackling online copyright infringement by customers of UK broadband ISPs may have to be delayed. The government had hoped to rush the code, which is a necessary part of the controversial 2010 Digital Economy Act (DEA), into operation next year but the sheer complexity of the process and a number of other issues are believed to be holding it up.

Broadband ISP supplier Entanet UK has taken a few shots at developments in the USA, which recently saw Google and Verizon moot a highly controversial proposal for tackling Net Neutrality (the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal) that would effectively exclude wireless carriers, potentially creating a two-tier Internet.

Businesses in Wales look set to benefit after ZyXEL UK, a broadband access solutions provider, and ISP Carrier Wales (CW) teamed up to help deliver fibre optic 'uncontended' connectivity with services from 10Mb to 1Gb to businesses across the country. CW also adds WiMAX wireless broadband technology on to the end of their 'hardwired network, allowing high-speed Internet that can reach out to more remote rural communities.

New Analysys Mason research, which is based upon data obtained from over 1000 fixed broadband bundles in the UK, Europe and USA, reveals that average monthly price paid (PPP) for a fixed broadband service bundle has fallen by £4.10 (5 Euros) between Q4-2009 and Q2-2010 to £33.42 (40.7 Euros) per month.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a swathe of complaints from members of the public, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband against a TV advert, three radio ads and a national press ad for BT Retail's Total Broadband service. Crucially the claim "CONSISTENTLY FASTER BROADBAND even at peak times" faced the biggest backlash, not least because of how BT adopts a Traffic Management policy.
