Welsh Wireless ISP Xwavia has today announced that the first residential and business customers in Conwy have been connected to their new superfast broadband network, which offers Internet speeds from 10Mbps to 1000Mbps (Megabits per second).

Believe it or not, Wales will be getting some 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband from BT as part of the local state aid supported £425m Superfast Cymru project. This aims to make faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC) speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016 (700,000 premises).

Budget ISP Primus Saver (New Call Telecom), which recently scrapped some of their old packages due to low uptake (here and here), has had a website advert for their “Unlimited Broadband for just £2” service banned after one of their customers suffered a mid-contract price rise for both line rental and broadband.

The government’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund, which was setup to help rural areas in the last 10% of England gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+), has issued an update to confirm that a total of 3,269 (up from 2,118 at the last update) domestic and business premises are currently anticipated to have the “potential” to receive such a service thanks to RCBF investment.

The community built and funded B4RN 4 Yealand, Silverdale & Storth (B4YS) project, which as the name suggests is a spin-off from B4RN’s scheme in Lancashire (England) that aims to roll-out a “hyperfast” 1000Mbps fibre optic based Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to the remote rural villages of Yealand, Silverdale and Storth, is close to hitting its first funding goal.
