The latest information on superfast broadband availability has revealed that, at the end of June 2014, some 87.9% of premises in the United Kingdom were in areas that are listed as offering services via a Next Generation Access (NGA) network and some 251,522 (premises passed) were potentially within reach of a true ultrafast (100Mbps+) fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connection.

The Connecting Shropshire project in England has announced a list of 13 new telephone exchange areas that can expect to be upgraded to support BT’s new “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by December 2015.

The Northumberland County Council in North East England are preparing to upload a much more detailed map of their local superfast broadband roll-out through the state aid supported iNorthumberland project. One thing the UK Internet access market has in abundance right now is budget broadband ISPs and thus you’d probably have to be a little mad to launch another one into such an aggressively competitive sector. Never the less that’s exactly what the famously budget high street retailer 99p Stores has just done.

In an interesting move the Bristol City Council (South West England) has decided to try and drum up more interest in the local Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme by extending its availability to businesses outside of the city’s administrative boundary. More UK cities may soon follow suit.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has published the first responses to its latest Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016) consultation and perhaps unsurprisingly it finds rivals including Vodafone, BSkyB (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Virgin Media all demanding greater access to BT’s cable ducts, dark fibre and leased lines.

Questions have been raised over the future of PlusNet’s ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband product, which until the end of last month had been offered as part of a trial for the past FOUR years (effectively acting as an unofficial product option), but is now closed to new subscribers.

Does offering a Pay TV service make your home broadband ISP more attractive? The latest poll of 821 ISPreview.co.uk readers found that 67.7% of respondents would be unlikely to stick with their current Internet provider just because it could also offer a decent and affordable Pay TV service (15.4% answered “maybe” and 16.8% said “yes” they would be more likely to stay).

Internet provider PlusNet Business has reduced the price of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps capable standard unlimited broadband and phone bundle to £5 +vat a month for the first 12 months (£13 thereafter), with line rental at £10.50 (standard payg call charges) on a 24 month contract.

A small slither of fresh news from the £25 million Better Broadband for Oxfordshire project reveals that the Harlequin Group (on behalf of BTOpenreach) has submitted a planning application for the installation of 8 new ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable FTTC street cabinets in Sonning Common, Gallowstree Common and Peppard Common (South Oxfordshire).

As expected the Government appears to have failed in its first tentative bid to boost mobile voice and Mobile Broadband coverage around the United Kingdom by attempting to encourage greater sharing of masts (network infrastructure) in the hope of fostering a national roaming policy.

Customers of Virgin Media appear to have had another mixed weekend after some were hit with yet more connection problems on their ntlworld.com email addresses, while others were forced to suffer an unexpected spate of “buffering” issues when attempting to watch video streams on the popular YouTube (Google) website.

A lot has been said about the ups and downs of the Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK scheme, not least with regards to the lack of detailed coverage maps, BT’s dominance of the contract(s) and how the final gap of 5% will be closed. ISPreview.co.uk has today roped in the CEO of BDUK, Christopher Townsend, to answer some of the most common queries.

After sitting the first round out the Swindon Borough Council has now agreed to team-up with the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme in order to make superfast broadband speeds of 24Mbps+ available to 95% of local homes and businesses by 2017 (100% have also been promised speeds of at least 2Mbps).

Business ISP Orbital Net, which includes fixed wireless provider Vfast among its flock, has been busy unbundling (LLU)/taking racks in BT’s telephone exchanges across Kent in order to take advantage of Generic Ethernet Access (GEA) solutions to offer superfast FTTC broadband to local businesses and homes.

First came Apple TV, then Roku (inc. Sky’s NOW TV service) followed by Google’s Chromecast and now Amazon’s Fire TV box has arrived in the United Kingdom to help put your broadband ISP connection to good use by streaming video and TV content instead of just getting it via a Satellite or that ugly antenna at the top of your house.

The communications regulator has today spoken of its “concern” for small and medium sized businesses in the United Kingdom, which it fears may be struggling to get the best out of the available broadband and phone services.
