Everybody has a right to complain to their supplier when something goes wrong but a new Consumer Action Monitor report from Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider, Ombudsman Services, claims that 40 million complaints (all sectors) went unaddressed because many people chose to “suffer in silence“.

The state aid supported £9.6m Northernlincs Broadband project has named the first communities to benefit from the roll-out of BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which aims to cover 92% of North and North East Lincolnshire in East England by spring 2015.

Competition concerns with the Broadband Delivery UK project have again been raised after BT’s Programme Manager for the £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset scheme in England, Laurent Boon, rejected a call for the parish of Upottery to receive a “fibre broadband” upgrade, which it said would cost the equivalent of £2,000 per property.

Communications provider EE will today remove the £50 connection fee from their superfast “Unlimited Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) packages, which offer speeds of up to 76Mbps and currently also benefit from a 3 months half price discount.

The Perth and Kinross Council in Scotland have begun phase one of their public and privately funded project with BT to extend the operators superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network out to 70% of local premises by 2015 and then 90% by December 2017.

Global broadband ISP speed testing outfit Ookla have revamped their Net Index (Speedtest.net) service to include a useful summary of download and upload speeds for Mobile Broadband operators in the United Kingdom (as well as other countries). Interestingly the fastest operator is T-Mobile.

The disruption caused to locals by Essex and Suffolk Water’s £150 million development to enhance the Abberton Reservoir (e.g. installation of two large raw water pipelines and a new pumping station) has resulted in a gift of £750,000 to help six rural villages get superfast broadband.

The Glasgow City Council has awarded a “wireless concession” to BT that allows the UK telecoms operator to roll-out a free wireless Internet service across the Scottish city and just in time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. But it will only be completely free for the first 6 months.

BT appears to have increased the value of their Sainsbury’s Gift Cards with standard broadband packages from £25 to £50 (until 17th February), while those included alongside their superfast broadband BTInfinity packages have jumped from £50 to £100. Most of their packages are currently also being offered at half-price for 3-6 months.

Bargain hunters will be displeased to learn that budget ISP Primus Saver, which is one of the markets cheapest broadband and phone providers, has followed Sky Broadband’s example (here) by withdrawing its annual pre-paid Line Rental Saver discount.

The £48m Onlincolnshire project in the East Midlands (England), which initially aimed to make BT’s superfast broadband (25Mbps+) network available to “at least” 88% of all homes and businesses in the county by April 2016, has won another £2.8m to help cover an extra 5,000 homes and businesses.

The latter is particularly horrifying but not when it nearly scuppers a seemingly harmless rural broadband project (the wireless aspect not Bieber).

Wessex Internet, a niche ISP that offers superfast wireless broadband (30Mbps) services to homes and businesses in rural parts of North Dorset and South West Wiltshire (Southern England), has confirmed that it intends to bid for a slice of the government’s new £10m Competitive Fund and they appear to have the backing of the local authority.

The Government has today called for feedback on their plans to develop a future digital communications infrastructure strategy, which aims to design a long-term plan for building even faster broadband networks, supporting the roll-out of IPv6 Internet addresses and developing 5G based Mobile Broadband technology etc.
