The CEO of UK ISP ITS Technology, Daren Baythorpe, has told ISPreview.co.uk in a new interview that the UK’s push to switch-off old copper line broadband networks in favour of Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP) presents both “opportunity and threat,” not least from the risk of enabling Openreach to “recreate a monopoly.”

One of the most common questions to grace our inbox centres around the still evident confusion over ISP choice on Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” network, which usually occurs once people realise that it’s not available (yet) from most of their usual haunts.

Budget ISP TalkTalk appears to have responded to Vodafone’s recent promotion by discounting the cost of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “Faster Fibre with Speed Boost” (67Mbps average) broadband and phone bundle to just £23.50 per month. Confusingly this makes it the same price as their slower 38Mbps plan.

A new survey of 1,000 UK broadband customers, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which?, has claimed that 87% of those who haggle with their ISP for a better deal were offered a discount or other incentive to stay with the provider rather than switch away, but apparently most people don’t try it.

Mobile operator Three UK informs us that new customers of their 4G based HomeFi service, which originally bundled unlimited mobile broadband data with a Huawei B311 router, are now optionally able to receive a more advanced Huawei B535 device instead.

Now this really is unique. One of the Government funded 5G RuralFirst testbeds on Orkney (Scotland) appears to be delivering “high-speed” wireless broadband to a number of remote rural properties by using solar panels as receivers for a new Light Fidelity (LiFi) network (i.e. Li-Fi solar backhaul).

One of TalkTalk’s TV adverts has been pulled after the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found it to be incorrect, which occurred because the connection speeds referenced in the broadcast’s voice-over did not match the speeds being promoted in the broadband provider’s on-screen text.

A few customers with G.fast based hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP lines have this week noticed a modest boost to their download speeds after a resync, which appears as if it could be associated to an interesting change with the operator’s spectrum frequency allocation (band plan) for the service.

The FibreNation project, which was setup last year by budget ISP TalkTalk and aspires to rollout a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to 3 million UK premises, has today signed a “multi-million pound” partnership with civil engineering firm Makehappen Group to help support its “UK-wide” deployment.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Wildanet, which is working to extend their broadband network to remote rural premises in parts of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and possibly South Wales, has announced a new strategic partnership with the Connectus Group in order to support new IP services for businesses in Cornwall.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that their new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA / SOGFast) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line from an ISP without the voice (phone) service, has now entered Early Market Deployment and published revised prices.

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire (BBO) partnership, which has worked with Openreach (BT) and Building Digital UK to extend the reach of FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to pass 97% of local premises, has just launched a new coverage map tool.

After yesterday’s Sky Broadband ISP news (here), which saw them soft launch a new range of ultrafast broadband packages, it’s worth noting that some of the provider’s Sky Q customers also appear to be receiving a new Sky Q Booster style device, which is essentially a WiFi extender for your home (set to form part of a new Sky WiFi Guarantee).

A few of Shell Energy’s UK broadband ISP customers, seemingly including some of those who were previously with First Utility before the recent rebrand, complain that they have been hit with letters from Debt Collectors after the provider appeared to stop taking automatic payments via established Direct Debits.

The Dumfries & Galloway Police have confirmed that a fire, which midday yesterday burned down BT’s Auchenmalg exchange in Scotland, also knocked out telephones, broadband (ADSL but not FTTC) and prevented fixed line calls to emergency services for those in the surrounding area. It could take “several days” to fix.

The long awaited launch of UK ISP Sky Broadband’s (Comcast) new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and G.fast based “Ultrafast Broadband” (145Mbps and 285Mbps average speed) packages looks to be imminent and one of our readers was able to grab a screenshot of the pricing, which is not yet showing for everyone.

19th Aug 2019 (16 Comments)

“If it’s not Three, it’s not real 5G” said Three UK this morning (here) when promoting the launch of their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. In response rival operator EE (BT) is reported to have lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over the slogan, which they say is “misleading“.
