UK ISP County Broadband, which is being fuelled by £46m from Aviva to help it deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England region, has seen its local workforce soar from 16 to 60 since the start of 2019 and they expect to hit 79 before the year is out.

Mobile operator O2 UK appears to have scrapped their Classic Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) plans for new customers in favour of a refreshed range of Big Bundles, which include unlimited calls and texts as standard; these require you to top-up every month in order to get the allowance.

Full fibre provider Community Fibre, which is aiming to cover more than 500,000 premises with their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2022, appears to have signed its first known ISP partner – Glemnet – in the UK capital city to help serve local businesses (B2B).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has posted their latest Q3 2019 results, which reveals that their “gigabit capable” internet and TV network covered another 119,000 premises in the quarter (total of 1.9 million added since 2015) and their total broadband base now stands at 5,269,100 (up by +2.4K in Q3 vs +7.1K in Q2).

After reducing their residential broadband prices Zen Internet has today announced further price drops – varying from between 8% and 22% – across their range of small business focused packages. This mostly appears to impact their standard ADSL, “superfast” FTTC and “ultrafast” G.fast based bundles (FTTP plans are unchanged).

Fibre optic ISP Jurassic Fibre has today announced that they’ve begun construction of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Devon UK, which will initially aim to cover various rural communities between Exeter airport and along the A376 corridor to Exmouth.

The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that their Group Director of Competition, Jonathan Oxley, will be appointed as an “interim” CEO while the longer than expected hunt continues to find a replacement for outgoing boss Sharon White, who leaves at the end of this month.

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has today made the surprise announcement that their long-running Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with BT (EE) will be coming to an end. Instead they’ve signed a new 5-year partnership deal for Virgin Mobile with rival operator Vodafone.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset project has opened a public consultation on their recent Open Market Review (OMR), which examined the current and future level of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in the two counties and set out a proposed intervention area, ahead of seeking suppliers for a new contract.

The state-owned ISP JT (Jersey Telecom), which has deployed a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover the English Channel Island of Jersey, has won the “The Best Network Transformation Award” for their roll-out as part of the World Communication Awards 2019 event.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has launched a new Black Friday promotion, which discounts the monthly prices of their broadband and phone packages for new subscribers and also offers two months of free service on their “superfast” Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based plans.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed the impact that the 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament has had on their mobile broadband (mostly 4G) network traffic, which for example delivered a 20% surge in data usage during the England v New Zealand semi-final on 26th September. Games involving Wales also created an increase.

Openreach has launched a new localised marketing promotion for UK ISPs, which offers discounts on the monthly rental and one-off connection costs of their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in a maximum of four conurbations (i.e. Fibre First cities with a limited footprint from 10,000 and up to 500,000 premises).

UK ISP Pulse8 Broadband has today announced that, for the second time this year, they’ve been able to drop the monthly prices of their unlimited home “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) packages, which applies to both new and existing customers (these also only attach a short 1 month contract term).

Ofcom has today opened a new consultation on the funding (compensation) arrangements for BT and KCOM’s forthcoming Universal Service Obligation (USO), which is due to begin on the 20th March 2020 and aims to ensure that everybody can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

Business ISP Giganet appears to have jumped on the UK Black Friday sales wagon a little early this year, not least by offering 2 months of free service on Cityfibre’s gigabit-capable “Elite” and “Flex” products and one month free on Giganet’s own Local Leased Line packages during November.

Business broadband ISP Glide has revealed that they’ve so far issued 1,100 vouchers under the UK Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which they claim has helped to save local businesses an estimated £2,750,000 in getting a new connection installed and increasing their access speeds ninefold.
