A new lab test conducted by Samsung has used 800MHz of spectrum bandwidth in the mmWave band and MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) technology to push 5G mobile broadband speeds up to hit a new aggregated peak downstream rate of 8.5Gbps (Gigabits per second), albeit only over a very short distance.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT (EE) is currently busy building their next generation UK 5G Core mobile network and as part of that they’ve just signed a new deal to harness Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core (Evolved Packet Core and 5G Core) platform, which will also help to underpin their single converged IP network.

UK ISP Voneus has announced that their “superfast broadband” (speeds of 30-50Mbps) capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network has been extended to cover premises both in and around two rural Gloucestershire “villages” of Sharpness and Newton, which is a big improvement on the c.5Mbps that some were previously restricted to.

RootMetrics has today published the results from their latest H1 2020 study of 4G and 5G mobile network and mobile broadband performance conducted across Wales, which is based on over 156,000 scientific tests conducted during the first couple of months of 2020. Overall EE and Vodafone UK are neck and neck at the top

Some 4 weeks have now passed since the UK was put into lockdown on 23rd March, although many people had already started working from home and limiting their movements over the prior 2 weeks. As such it’s worth taking a quick look back to see how broadband ISP and mobile speeds, as well as general internet traffic, have changed.

The CEO of broadband and mobile giant BT, Philip Jansen, has revealed that 39 engineers have been verbally or physically assaulted – including threats to kill – over the completely bonkers conspiracy theory that links the spread of COVID-19 to 5G (11 mobile masts have also been destroyed or damaged by arson – 33 from all UK operators).

Most of us are lucky enough to live within reach of a fairly strong UK mobile broadband (3G, 4G or 5G) network signal but that isn’t true everywhere, particularly in some remote rural areas. Sometimes the best way to receive a stronger signal is to try installing your own external antenna, but knowing what to get can be tricky.

A new study from UK internet connection testing experts at SamKnows has revealed that some of the market’s largest broadband ISPs did suffer a performance decrease in both download speed and latency times since the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown began, but the change is only around -2% to -3%.

In a new interview the CEO of ISP WightFibre, John Irvine, has spoken to ISPreview about some of the challenges they’ve faced in deploying Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband across the Isle of Wight (England), particularly obstacles created by the council, and their future hope of covering 71,000 premises by 2025.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has won a legal case that was started by one of its former Programme Director’s, Rebecca Burke, who had crowd-funded an equal pay dispute against the provider after she allegedly claimed to have been paid far less than male colleges. But a tribunal found no evidence of discrimination or unfair dismissal.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has enhanced their response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis by announcing that it will enable unlimited mobile data (mobile broadband) for all NHS staff for the next six months. The offer is set to be supported, from today, with a TV campaign featuring Kevin Bacon (naturally).

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK has announced yet another bonus for existing Pay TV customers during the COVID-19 crisis. All of their TV customers will now gain free access to some of Sky’s most popular channels (e.g. Sky One, Sky Sports Mix etc.) from Good Friday until 9th May 2020.

Internet giant Google has announced that, due to the lockdown caused by COVID-19, they’re going to give video gamers in 14 countries (including the UK) “free access” to Stadia Pro for two months (usually £8.99 per month) and you can cancel at any time. Just makes sure your broadband ISP speed is up to the challenge.

Before it was only a mathematical model (here) but now, after three years, the idea of pushing broadband ISP speeds of up to 1 Terabit per second (1000000Mbps) along a traditional copper line by using previously unexploited “waveguide modes” is finally being turned into a practical lab test at Brown University (USA).
