The Scottish Government (SG) has today announced a new funding package of £4 million, which will be used to establish a new “national network of hubs” – S5GConnect Hubs – to help accelerate the adoption of ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) technology across Scotland.

Full fibre UK broadband ISP Jurassic Fibre, which plans to cover 350,000 premises with a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South West England (here and here), has confirmed that they’ll start to expand outside of Devon and into Somerset, with Honiton and Taunton being the next two areas to benefit.

Cambium Networks has today become one of the first companies to make a new network solution available to UK ISPs that harnesses the 60GHz radio spectrum band, Facebook’s Terragraph technology and Qualcomm’s latest 802.11ay (WiFi) compliant standard to deliver multi-Gigabit wireless broadband speeds.

Research from the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) has claimed that 88.7% of the UK’s challenger alternative broadband network (AltNet) providers would support the creation of a common platform, through which they could provide wholesale services to third-party providers.

The Permanent Secretary for the UK Home Office, Matthew Rycroft, has informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that the new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN) is now unlikely to completely take over from the existing platform until early 2024 or late 2025. Previously it was due by December 2022.

A new ruling by Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has today, for the first time, interpreted the EU regulation enshrining “internet neutrality” (this was also adopted in the UK), which appears to restrict mobile and broadband operators when offering zero rating plans (i.e. unlimited data on certain services).

Openreach (BT) have today added 67 new locations into their UK “Fibre Cities” roll-out programme for 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which forms part of their £12bn project to cover 20 million premises by around the mid to late 2020s (2025 – 2030).

A joint £2.1m project between Openreach (BT), Buckinghamshire County Council and the Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) looks set to result in a further 270 businesses and 485 homes in the county’s most rural communities gaining access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

A new O2 commissioned survey of 1,000 adults has claimed that 20% of UK business – reflecting £205bn of economic output – was safeguarded by the power of mobile connectivity during the COVID-19 lockdown between March and September 2020, which it did by enabling many people to work flexibly and remain productive at home.

The operator usually only does towns and cities.

Civil engineering firm Morrison Telecom Services (MTS), part of the M Group Services, and Telent both appear to have secured another contract (or extension) with Openreach (BT), which will see them support the operator’s expanded £12bn UK deployment of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology.

Multiple credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the Northern Ireland Executive are set to announced that alternative network ISP Fibrus has beaten BT (Openreach) to be chosen as the main supplier for their £165m Project Stratum programme, which will extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre UK has today entered into a new partnership with Renfrewshire Council, which will see them invest £40 million to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across homes and businesses in the historic towns of Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone.
