Rural UK ISP County Broadband, which is currently building a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in rural parts of Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, has today announced the first town in Suffolk to benefit from their on-going deployment – Sudbury.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK have published their latest results to the end of September 2020 (financial Q2 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base top 838,000 customers (up by +45k in the quarter vs +42K in the previous quarter), while their mobile base declined to 17,380,000 (down by -200k).

The first 2,000 homes in the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent can now access one of the UK’s first part-publicly-owned open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks, which is being deployed under a £19.2m partnership between the city council and Swedish operator VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today opened applications for their new £15 per month “Essential Broadband” plan, which offers download speeds of just 15Mbps (2Mbps upload), unlimited data usage and a 30-day rolling contract. But you can only get this if you’re receiving Universal Credit from the Government.

London-focused UK broadband ISP CommunityFibre will later this morning launch a new Black Friday offer, which combines a special discount with their on-going double speed boost in order to give new customers an 800Mbps (symmetric) speed service for the first 24 months of service at just £30 per month.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has reported that last week’s internet data traffic record of 6.85Tbps (Terabits per second), which was set on 10th Nov (here), has been broken again on Saturday 14th November 2020, when they hit a new peak of 6.94Tbps.

A new survey of 132 landlords who own properties in London, which was conducted by UK ISP CommunityFibre in collaboration with Inside Housing, has revealed that cost (77%) and installation complexities (55%) are still perceived to be the biggest barriers to housing owners getting “full fibre” broadband installed in their properties.

Ofcom’s new Q2 2020 consumer complaints report is out today, which names UK ISP TalkTalk as attracting the most gripes for both home broadband and landline phone, while Three UK did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

The Carmarthenshire Council in South West Wales has approved, as part of the wider Swansea Bay City Deal, an investment of £55m to boost digital connectivity in the region, which among other things looks set to help deploy more “full fibre” broadband connectivity and support improvements to mobile networks.

As expected CK Hutchison Holdings, which is the parent of mobile network operator Three UK and some other providers, has today agreed to sell interests in European tower assets (including the UK, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden) and businesses to Spanish company Cellnex for £9bn (€10 billion).

The University of Surrey has launched the UK’s first 6th Generation Innovation Centre (6GIC), which will act as a “global research hub” to help develop future 6G based mobile broadband tech. Apparently this could take an “entirely new approach” from the tradition of pushing ever-higher data rates over ever-higher spectrum bands.
