CityFibre UK has today issued some important progress updates on their plans to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover premises (homes and businesses) across the city of Glasgow (Scotland), and the towns of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and Blackpool in Lancashire (England).

Rural network operator Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has announced that their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service has just been extended to connect homes around six more villages in Monmouthshire (South Wales) as part of a £2 million scheme.

Rural broadband ISP Airband, which aspires to deploy their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises by the end of 2025 (here), has announced that they’ve just gone live in the Oxfordshire town of Thame, which is home to around 12,000 people, and more will follow.

Two unnamed broadband or mobile ISPs are reportedly helping the UK Home Office and the National Crime Agency (NCA) to trial a new internet snooping system on their customers, which is being conducted as part of the controversial 2016 UK Investigatory Powers Act (aka – snoopers charter).

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) last night announced, during a mass forum, that they have “taken the decision to move to an official national industrial action ballot” for all employees after failing to “resolve the points of disagreement” that exist between themselves and BT, Openreach and EE.

CityFibre has announced that they will invest an additional £1.5m to boost the coverage of their original £30m project in the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough, which was one of their first deployments of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network with UK ISP partner Vodafone (plus TalkTalk).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that their auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands will begin this Friday (12th March). The move should ultimately help to improve the coverage and speed of 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

In a brief announcement Starlink (SpaceX) has today confirmed that their new constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites is “now available in parts of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England,” which is in addition to existing service areas across southern England.

A new Opinium based survey from Uswitch.com, which questioned a “nationally representative” sample of 2,000 UK adults during February 2021, has found that 54.4% of respondents (equivalent to 29.5 million UK consumers) have suffered from some form of mobile signal “issue” at home, and it’s worse in rural areas.

The Northern Ireland Executive (DfE) has today announced that the first customers have now gone live on the new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which is being built with state aid support from the £165m Project Stratum programme.

The CEO of BT’s (EE) UK Consumer broadband and mobile division, Marc Allera, is attempting to resuscitate the age-old debate over Net Neutrality (i.e. treating all internet traffic on their networks equally) by calling for the rules to be changed because “there are very good reasons to enable preferential access to certain platforms.”
