Project Gigabit BDUK Funded Digital UK Broadband Map

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today released their March 2026 update on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 227,310 contracted premises (up from 215,380 in Feb 2026) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 1,020,160.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today allowed broadband satellite operators (e.g. Starlink and Amazon Leo) to harness up to 10GHz of extra radio spectrum frequency in the Q and V bands to help boost the backhaul data capacity of their ground-based gateway sites. But the main focus of this will initially be on rural “low density” areas covering 94% of the UK’s landmass.

The SIM-Only mobile provider Spusu, which holds a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement to harness EE’s 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network, has today announced that they’ve reached a key milestone by growing to total 150,000 active subscribers in less than three years since launch in the UK.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve so far switched-on their next-generation 5G Standalone (5GSA / 5G+) mobile broadband network across 66 large towns and cities, 175 smaller towns, and 1,120 villages in Scotland as part of its UK-wide rollout. A total of over 4 million people and businesses now have access in the country.

Customers of broadband ISP Zen Internet appear to have been experiencing difficulties sending emails to Microsoft’s popular email services (Outlook / Hotmail etc.) since last week, which occurred after the software giant “blacklisted some domain servers hosted in our network“.

The Government’s Minister for Digital Government and Data, Ian Murray MP, has indicated that they’re looking closely at how their stake in OneWeb’s (Eutelsat) constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) could be used to ensure domestic communications resilience in remote areas; as opposed to becoming too reliant on Elon Musk’s Starlink.

Several UK-based and European technology companies, including Excelerate Technology, Eutelsat (OneWeb) and Livewire Digital, have today launched a new solution called NOMADLINK, which is a trailer pulled unit that can be used to deliver emergency broadband and voice connectivity to major incidents, large public events, and rural or isolated communities across the UK.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today revealed that their O2 Recycle service, which helps people to trade in their old technology (usually in return for cash, credits or a charitable donation), has helped to save 85,500 devices from waste in 2025 – paying out nearly £6.6 million to customers trading in their unwanted tech.

London-based ISP The One Broadband (‘The One‘) has acquired the CityFibre linked customer base of retail internet provider Octaplus, which has spent the past few years selling broadband packages to consumers via a number of alternative full fibre networks. But customers on the provider’s other networks “will not be affected“.

A new report from The YIMBY Initiative (TYI), which describes itself as a cross-party UK research led think-tank, has today argued that “small changes” to existing legislation and frameworks could reform the planning system just enough to help boost the deployment and coverage of 5G based mobile broadband networks.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has today expanded their range of monthly rolling fixed full fibre (FTTP) broadband plans by introducing the option of a cheaper 24-month minimum contract term. The move makes the monthly pricing on each of their packages between £3 and £4 cheaper. Existing members will also get 3 months of service for free.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest broadband ISP satisfaction survey, which questioned 5,235 UK members of the public (Dec 2025 to Jan 2026) about their internet providers. Once again Zen Internet came top of the pack with a customer score of 84%, while NOW TV (NOW Broadband) hit rock bottom on 54%.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today followed up on last month’s announcement, which revealed their plans for combining Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hayu into a single subscription (here), by confirmed that customers can – from today – enjoy Disney+ as part of their Sky TV subscription.

Networking technology giant Nokia has today set out its “early vision” for the next.. next generation of Wi-Fi 9 wireless networking standards. This is despite the fact that work is still ongoing to develop the final standard for the future Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn – Ultra High Reliability) standard (here and here), which isn’t expected to be finalised until May 2028.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today worked with Vecta Labs to deploy “Europe’s first pre-assembled mobile mast” at a site in Sandwich, Kent (England) – taking only 4 hours to complete, which compares with the usual 2 days. Such an approach could speed up the roll-out of new mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) infrastructure, reduce deployment costs and cut downtime.
