The Rutland County Council (RCC) in England has today confirmed that the first community (village) to get access to BT’s new superfast broadband (FTTC/P) service through its publicly funded £3 million Digital Rutland project is North Luffenham.

Some of the country’s broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that Rights Holders are putting pressure on them to prevent their broadband customers from being able to access two extra website (EZTV and Yify-Torrents), which have both been accused of facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

The UK Free Software Network (UKFSN), a small internet access and web hosting provider that helps to fund free software projects from its profits, has today officially been struck off and dissolved by Companies House (company no. 05292112). But happily the ISP is not dead and will continue to operate.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has launched several new promotions including one that offers their unlimited broadband and free weekend calls bundle at half price (£5) for 12 months (6 months half price on their superfast FTTC package) or FREE if you take the Sky Sports pack. A £100 M&S Voucher is also available on their TV bundle.

The joint £132m public and privately funded “Big Build” Superfast Cornwall project, which aims to make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) technology available to 95% of local premises by the end of 2014, is now covering 75% of the area.

Residents, visitors and businesses in the centre of Hull in East Yorkshire (England) can now access a new network of free “high-speed” wireless internet (WiFi) hotspots after local telecoms operator, KC, began installing access points on the city’s aging public phone boxes.

A new RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband performance in Hull (East Yorkshire, England) has revealed that EE was the fastest mobile operator with an average download speed of 9.6Mbps and an upload of 5.5Mbps (Megabits per second). Three UK became the distant runner-up with O2 and Vodafone delivering the slowest performance.

ISP PlusNet has begun offering a series of new half price promotions on their standard (up to 16Mbps) and superfast (up to 80Mbps) unlimited broadband and phone bundle packages, although the ISP has also quietly hiked some of their line rental and call plan prices.

The latest quarterly results from O2 UK (BE Broadband) appear to suggest that the ISPs fixed line home broadband customers have been climbing over themselves to escape the forthcoming migration to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) as subscriber figures fell by a staggering -40,700 in Q1-2013 to total 519,400.

The Durham County Council (DCC) in North East England (UK) has today signed a new state aid supported £24 million deal with BT that will see “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services being rolled out to “around” 94% of local premises by the end of 2016.

The WiSpire network, which works with the Diocese of Norwich and ISP FreeClix to roll-out wireless internet connectivity by installing wifi transmitters on top of church spires, has expanded its network coverage to four more villages in rural Norfolk (England, UK).
