New research from network management firm NetEvidence, which studied 6,000 UK companies owning leased line broadband Internet connections, has revealed that 1 in 6 suffer performance loss due to insufficient bandwidth. The growing prevalence of bandwidth hungry business applications, such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP), is partly to blame.

Ofcom has today proposed that BT be allowed to increase the price it charges for some of its wholesale telephone and broadband line services, most specifically its unbundled ( LLU ) products. However, BT has reacted angrily to the proposals, warning that they are still too low and will not allow the operator to fully recover its costs.

Internet search giant Google has updated its popular slim-line Google Chrome website browser with the first major new release since its initial launch 8 months ago. Elsewhere the browser has also been updated to fix hundreds of stability bugs and can now run JavaScript-heavy web pages about 30% faster than before.

The USA based Hulu, a free online broadband video (IPTV) service that offers web access to hit TV shows and is backed by News Corp, NBC Universal and Disney, could be set for a September 2009 launch in the UK. It's understood that the service is also in talks with the BBC, ITV and Channel4 to secure access to related content.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which does not include countries such as China and Russia etc., has published its latest semi-global broadband statistics to the end of December 2008. Happily the UK managed to retain its position as the 5th largest broadband market in the OECD with 17,275,660 broadband subscribers.

Not long ago Orange UK hinted that it might buy at least part of the failed Project Kangaroo service (original news), a broadband Internet TV (IPTV) venture between the BBC, ITV and Channel4. Sadly the service was abandoned after the Competition Commission (CC) blocked its introduction. Today the Telegraph reports that Orange has now pulled out of negotiations to buy the services technology, allegedly because the price was too high.

Popular UK ISP ICUK has become the latest provider to launch a new up to 16Mbps (1.3Mbps upload) unbundled ( LLU ) broadband service based off ADSL2+ technology. The package costs £25 inc. VAT per month but includes unlimited uploads and unmetered downloads.

Vodafone UK's business division has reportedly removed its overseas Mobile Broadband packages from sale and is preparing to introduce several new data roaming tariffs sometime in the next few days. The old Euro Travel (£60 per month) and World Travel (£95 per month) packages included 200MB of monthly roaming data usage.

The UK Government has finally, after well over two months of waiting, issued its official response to a Number10.gov.uk petition that requested the Prime Minister (Gordon Brown) to "stop ISP's from breaching customers privacy via advertising technologies". Sadly the reply is unsurprisingly weak and palms most of the responsibility off onto old guidance from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Mobile operator T-Mobile UK has once again won high praise for its Mobile Broadband service via an independent April 2009 YouGov survey of 2,083 respondents. The results ranked the operator first in 6 out of 13 customer satisfaction metrics, which is actually less than the 9 out of 13 they received back in the previous survey (original news).

Ofcom UK has slashed the amount of time that consumers are forced to wait before having their broadband ISP and or telecoms related complaints resolved. Presently consumers must give their provider 12 weeks to solve the problem, only then can they take the complaint up with an alternative dispute resolution service (CISAS and Otelo).

Fibre optic broadband supplier i3 Group (H2O Networks) has acquired Cyclops, a CCTV and UV lining firm. The move means that damaged sewer pipes can be repaired quickly and easily via its new H2O Services division. Typically i3 uses underground sewers to distribute its up to 100Mbps Fibre to the Home (FTTH) broadband services in Bournemouth and Dundee.

Analysts at Point Topic UK have published an informative overview of the Scottish Government's apparently successful Universal Service Commitment on broadband, which cost just £25 million to achieve. Unlike the 2Mbps USO proposed by Lord Carter, Scotland's 0.5Mbps (512Kbps) is in place now and provides virtually 100% coverage. In principle, anybody has been able to get at least 0.5Mbps at an affordable price if they want it.
