London-based LONAP, a neutral not-for-profit Internet Exchange Point, has disconnected the little known UK broadband ISP Wave Rider (OpenSense / Comline Networks Ltd.) over an invoicing dispute. It's understood that LONAP has also warned other members to shut down their peering with the provider in order to avoid network problems.

The BBC Trust has announced that Project Canvas, an open standard that aims to deliver broadband TV (IPTV) services directly into the Home via special Set-Top-Boxes (original news), will be delayed due to a lack of detail and explanation on several key areas. The proposal is part of a joint venture between the BBC, ITV and BT. The current consultation had been due to post its conclusion on 24th July and a new date has yet to be set.

The Managing Director (MD) of Easynet Connect ( BSkyB - Sky Broadband ), Chris Stening, has issued a small 'business perspective' comment on the recent news that consumers now see broadband Internet access as being as essential as their water or electricity supply (original news).

Tesco's mobile phone store - Tesco contract mobiles - has today begun offering free Laptops and Netbooks as part of its new 'build your own' Mobile Broadband offer. The deal allows people to choose from over 30 Laptops or Netbooks coupled with Mobile Broadband packages from a selection of the leading networks.

Broadband ISP SurfAnyTime has revamped its website and launched a new range of up to 24Mbps (1.3Mbps upload) ADSL2+ based services for residential and business users. The Home options claim to offer a "Truly UNLIMITED" service - free from Fair Usage Policies, traffic shaping (no blocked ports) and no peak / off-peak split. There’s also a choice of either 1 or 12 month contracts.

ISP Entanet , a wholesale voice and broadband data communications provider , has warned that forcing UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to monitor all content could have a serious and dramatic impact on both price and performance. The provider has also raised concerns about how such a move might impact privacy and the security of data.

Independent testing house P3 Solutions has named T-Mobile as the top UK provider of Mobile Broadband services. The Q1-2009 tests were conducted during peak usage hours in 16 UK cities for all major mobile network operators. The results found T-Mobile to be fastest for web browsing, uploading files to the web and delivered the fastest average performance for email.

Customers of the BT Retail's Total Broadband service, which is used by 4.8 Million business and residential consumers around the UK, will be pleased to learn that the operator is upgrading all connections to support speeds of up to 20Mbps and free of charge. The move is made possible thanks to BT's somewhat late adoption of ADSL2+ technology, which has been around for awhile.

UK ISP Entanet , a wholesale voice and data Communications provider that supplies a large number of virtual ISPs (vISPs) around the country (e.g. ADSL24 and Aquiss ) , has confirmed that it too will be taking part in the much anticipated trials of BT's next generation Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) up to 40Mbps broadband technology.

Broadband ISP Tiscali UK, which is currently in the process of being acquired by TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ), has announced the launch of a new enhanced Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) for its Tiscali TV (IPTV) service. Launching on 10th June, the new EPG is said to be more personalised, faster, widescreen and uses High Definition (HD) graphics.

The latest Communications Consumer Panel (CCP) survey of 2,000 adults has shown that 84% of people agreed that it should be possible for everyone in the UK to have broadband at home, regardless of where they live. Nearly three-quarters of people with broadband at home say that they couldn’t live without it.

The new kit enables speeds of up to 200Mbps and also aims to help every household reduce its daily energy consumption. Powerline uses your homes plug sockets to convert hidden power cables into an Ethernet style local area network (LAN).

Business ISP Griffin Internet has confirmed that it will be one of several UK providers taking part in BT's initial trials of future Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology. The service aims to deliver fibre optic broadband download services at up to 40Mbps+ (2Mbps upload) to existing homes and businesses.

Gravity Internet has cut the price of its up to 24Mbps download (1.3Mbps upload) business broadband ADSL Pro 2Plus (3 month contract) package to £99 +vat per month (£45 +vat connection fee). The service is uncapped with no usage limits and includes traffic priority over standard ADSL services in addition to Enhanced Care (service level guarantee).

Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for May 2009. It shows that the average UK broadband download speed has now reached 4.248Mbps, which is up from 4.137Mbps in April. The average upload speed also saw a tiny increase to 0.431Mbps.

The BBC has raised concerns after it learned that BT's Total Broadband traffic management platform was being used to throttle the speed at which customers view web based video sites, such as its own iPlayer service and YouTube. Customers that take BT's cheaper Option 1 deal will find their speeds to streaming video sites reduced to less than 1Mbps between the hours of 1700 and midnight.

Mobile operator Three (3) has announced that all existing prepay customers will be given free texts and Mobile Broadband Internet data usage (150MB) with every top up. Every 3Pay customer will also get free 3-to-3 calls, free Skype calls, free access to voicemail, and be able to use Windows Live Messenger (IM), regardless of what their balance is.

Thanks in no small part to our current governments pursuit of frightening data retention services, which forces broadband ISPs and telecom operators to log your website visits, telephone calls and email accesses (not the content), the UK has now placed 5th in Cryptohippie's (.PDF) global survey of 52 countries for the most advanced electronic police states.

The latest April 2009 Mobile Metrics Report from AdMob has revealed that Apple's popular iPhone now accounts for an estimated 43% of mobile Internet usage/traffic. The results are hardly surprising given that most new Smartphone’s are now significantly better at showing full websites on small screens than ever before; we still prefer to break out the netbook though.
