ISP Vtesse Networks, a provider of fibre optic networking services, has today announced the deployment of new infrastructure in Hertfordshire designed to demonstrate that superfast broadband can be viable for residents of "Final Third" communities. This refers to approximately one third of the UK population who currently are, for economic or technical reasons, unlikely ever to be able to receive a superfast connection.

Kent-based VFast, a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP, informs that the quiet rural village of Barham near Canterbury in Kent has now been enabled with a superfast up to 25Mbps broadband connection. The service is delivered from a Central Fibre installed by VFast, thanks to funding obtained from Kent County Council, with the last mile being distributed via a WiMAX wireless broadband link.

ISP Vtesse Networks has lost its case against unfair fibre taxes issued by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). Vtesse claimed that the VOA taxes its fibre network in a different way from BT, which results in higher and thus unfair costs.

Network Neutrality (Net Neutrality), which advocates no restrictions to Internet content, sites, or platforms by Internet access providers, is a touchy subject even at the best of times and it could be about to get worse if UK broadband ISPs follow Telefónica's ambition to charge Internet search engines for using their networks.

It will now display what Ofcom market your telephone exchange is in and details of BT Wholesale's new fibre optic based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) broadband products; availability and estimated speeds - no results are is given for exchanges without a ‘ready for service’ date.

Fibrestream's strategic partnership (NextGenUs) has hailed the success of its latest broadband coverage project in the rural villages of Newton and Stape (two adjoining parishes in deeply rural North Yorkshire). Residents can now benefit from download and upload speeds of up to 10Mbps.

Mobile operator Orange UK has rolled out a new opt-in daily data roaming tariff across the European Union (EU) - £2 for 2MB. You will be charged the bundle fee each day for any data you use up until the allowance has been used (must be consumed by midnight). The out of bundle usage is charged at the standard rate of £3 per MB.

Under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations 1999 act all UK broadband ISPs are required to be clear, fair and up front with any extra charges they may levy against a customer. Ofcom also imposed its own set of guidelines during December 2008, which were designed to reinforce the message.

Mobile operator Three (3) has raised the usage allowance on its 1 month contract Mobile Broadband package up from 3GB to 5GB (Gigabytes’). The price remains the same at £15 per month and a USB Modem (Dongle) can be added for just £9.99, otherwise the service is available as just a SIM card (only works with a 3 dongle).

Analysys Mason has suggested that small businesses could save 67% (£2145 each year) off their roaming Internet access costs by switching from Wi-Fi Hotspot providers to Mobile Broadband services instead. The data estimates that each employee who travels throughout the year can accumulate Wi-Fi charges of up to £700.

Broadband provider XILO has announced that, in an effort to stay competitive, it is revamping its BT-based broadband packages to increase the usage allowances and reduce prices. The enhanced packages will also include a new unmetered off-peak period for late night surfing.

Broadband provider Zen Internet has warned UK consumers that it will be difficult for BT Retail's rivals to match the operators 'up to' 40Mbps Infinity fibre optic broadband package prices. Infinity was the first next generation access product in the country to use BT’s latest FTTC technology, which officially began its commercial rollout last month.

Google has announced that it is planning to build and test ultra high-speed 1Gbps fibre optic broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. The fact that somebody is building a 1Gbps FTTH network outside the UK, which will offer services at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people, probably wouldn't even be news if it wasn't Google doing it.

The GSM Association (GSMA) reports that global Mobile Broadband connections have roughly doubled over the last 12 months to reach a milestone of 200 million. It's noted that 16 million Britons made use of Mobile Broadband services during December 2009 and the biggest driver was social networking content (e.g. Facebook).
