Big UK ISPs Clarify the Confusion over Network Level Internet Filters

A few remarks made by the Conservative MP for Devizes, Claire Perry, to the Westminster eForum on 14th June last week have generated a significant quantity of often misleading reports suggesting that default internet filtering of adult website by UK ISPs will be introduced by early 2014. But this isn’t entirely correct.

Broadband providers BT and TalkTalk have adjusted their voluntary blocking of online child abuse websites by replacing the old generic error messages with a more descriptive warning, which shows to anybody whom attempts to access related internet pages.

The British Labour Party’s Shadow Culture Minister, Helen Goodman MP, yesterday used a debate in the House of Commons to call for all broadband ISPs to install internet censorship (filtering) systems by default because, she claimed, it was a “near-impossible task for many” people to download their own Parental Control solutions. The UK government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has called in major mobile operators, broadband ISPs and online content giants (BT, Sky, Facebook, Twitter etc.) to a special summit on 17th June 2013 where she intends to urge stricter censorship of internet websites and services that distribute “harmful material”.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) appears to have become the first major UK ISP to extend its court ordered censorship of specific websites that facilitate internet piracy (e.g. The Pirate Bay) to include a wide range of proxy servers, which allows users to bypass such blocks without needing to use a VPN or other solution.

O2 UK Accused of Political Censorship by Male Human Rights Websites

Mobile operator O2 UK has been accused of unfair “sexism and political censorship” after its mobile broadband platform was found to still be blocking over 100 websites that promote equality for men and or which have dedicated themselves to helping male victims of domestic violence and rape.

Internet providers BT, Sky Broadband and Virgin Media have confirmed that their broadband customers will shortly find themselves unable to access the Download4All and Movie2k websites after a court order issued in late April 2013 forced both to be censored over copyright infringement (piracy). The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) appears to be preparing for another run of court orders after music licensing firm PPL revealed a new list of 25 website domains, which are all accused of facilitating copyright infringement (internet piracy), that the UK music body would like broadband ISPs to block.

ISP Sky Broadband Unblocks Legal Website Caught in The Pirate Bay Net

BT, Virgin Media and other ISPs have officially started blocking their broadband customers from being able to access three websites – Fenopy, H33t and Kickass Torrents – that were last month found by London’s High Court to be facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

NPD Group Report 17 Percent Fall in P2P Internet Music Piracy for 2012

Market research firm NPD Group has reported in its Annual Music Study 2012 that the number of broadband ISP internet users using peer-to-peer (P2P) based file sharing services to “illegally” download music declined by 17% in 2012 to 21 million people (down from a peak of 33m in 2005).

As anticipated the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which represents much of the UK music industry, will today ask the High Court to force six of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs into blocking a further three websites that are accused of facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).
