Good news, Ofcom’s latest Q2 2016 consumer complaints report finds that the total volume of UK Telecoms (mobile, broadband and phone) and Pay TV complaints has declined. Sadly some ISPs have fared better than others, with BT coming out top of the worst for fixed line home broadband.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has launched a special 9 month contract deal for students, which offers their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps broadband (ADSL2+) service for “free” (£10 a month thereafter) but of course you still have to pay the price of phone line rental on top (£17.40 per month).

The UK telecoms regulator has today echoed last month’s TalkTalk linked investigation (here) by provisionally concluding that BT “overcharged” Sky (Sky Broadband) for their Special Fault Investigation (SFI) engineer service and Time Related Charges (TRC).

Cityfibre has published their full H1 2016 results, which among other things reveals that the joint 940Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband trial with Sky Broadband and TalkTalk in York (England) is now “completed” (14,000 premises passed) and “achieved all target objectives in terms of penetration and deployment costs.” But what comes next?

Customers of Sky Broadband and BT have been warned that some of them may have been affected after Internet giant Yahoo! confirmed that at least 500 million of its accounts were stolen in 2014 by “state-sponsored” hackers. Both ISPs make use of the company for their email platforms.

Last year Sky Broadband became the first of the major ISPs in the United Kingdom to begin a wide-scale roll-out of the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) addressing standard and today they’ve confirmed that their work is “almost completed“, with over 90% of their broadband customers being IPv6 enabled.

A number of ISPs (e.g. Sky Broadband and Gigaclear) in big parts of South West England are currently being affected after a major (trunk) fibre optic cable was damaged in an unspecified incident, which has cut Internet and phone services around parts of Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

New consumers wishing to take Sky Broadband’s unlimited and FTTC based ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) Sky Fibre Max service may like to know that the ISP has cut its price to just £15 per month for the first 12 months of service (£25 thereafter), but you also have to pay £17.40 a month line rental on top.

Sky Broadband, after taking a fair break from big price promotions, has now returned to offer their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband package free for 12 months (£10 thereafter), although you still have to add Line Rental from £17.40 per month. On top of that they’ve thrown in a £75 Prepaid MasterCard.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has blasted his rivals behind the Fix Britain’s Internet campaign (Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone) for making “misleading statements” and using “Orwellian tactics” in order to argue that UK broadband services would improve if the operator didn’t control Openreach.

Ofcom’s long running probe into the rising cost of Premier League TV rights (football, rugby etc.), which was started by Virgin Media in 2014 and followed frustration over the impact of a bidding war between BT and Sky (Sky Broadband), has today been closed. But a few positive tweaks are coming.
