The Sheffield-based UK ISP Prodigy Internet, which has been in trouble and fined £30,000 by Ofcom before over its chequered history with handling broadband migrations (here and here), has now seen its service taken off-line after supplier BT Wholesale and regulator Ofcom were unable to contact them.

The latest quarterly (Q4-2008) State of the Internet research from Akamai has revealed that nearly 20% of the world's broadband ISP users are connecting at speeds greater than 5Mbps, which shrinks to just 8% for British users where the average speed is closer to 3.5Mbps. South Korea came top, again, with average speeds of 15Mbps. Globally, the average connection speed was approximately 1.5Mbps.

The European Union's (EU) Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Protection, Meglena Kuneva, is to give a presentation later this week outlining the EU's intent to extend its investigation of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) systems like Phorm . This will involve gathering evidence from both ISPs and consumers on what information is being collected and manipulated by providers and advertisers.

UK ISP TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ) has issued a brief market update about several forthcoming price adjustments to its broadband and voice products. The changes, they claim, are necessary to help compensate for BT's recent price rises, which TalkTalk got frustrated about earlier this month (original news).

UK ISP and network operator Entanet has partnered with hardware manufacturer Zoom Technologies to offer a new consumer VoIP solution. Zoom's latest device - the X6v Model 5695 - integrates an ADSL 2+ broadband modem, wireless ( Wi-Fi ) router with firewall security, four-port switch and a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone adapter, and will come bundled with the new VoIP Express service.

ISP Tiscali UK has reported its latest set of results to the end of 2008 (Q4), which shows yet another decline in its broadband (ADSL) subscriber base to 1,768,000 from 1,774,000 in Q3 2008. However this reduction of -6,000 customers is significantly slower than the -64,000 drop seen between Q2 and Q3 of the same year.

The Daily Telegraph has rumoured that The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Opal , One.Tel ) might be preparing to table a new bid for Tiscali's UK ISP division. In addition it's claimed that BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) could also renew sale talks, despite Tiscali deeming negotiations "almost impossible to continue" earlier this month (original news).

The head of Mobile Internet and Entertainment at T-Mobile UK, Richard Warmsley, has hinted that the operator will soon begin offering a new range of Pay Per Use (PPU) style Mobile Broadband packages. Unlike Pay As You Go (PAYG), PPU solutions allow customers to purchase their USB Modem (Dongle) and pay for usage as and when they need it. By comparison usage on PAYG packages will usually expire after a given period of time (e.g. 1 month etc.).

ISP Vivaciti Broadband has announced the introduction of two new up to 8Mbps (ADSL MAX) services, which includes a HOME package for £20.70 inc. VAT per month that offers an impressive 75GigaByte (GB) monthly usage allowance. The provider will also soon begin offering a new range of line rental services, which can be bundled, and has plans for cheaper up to 24Mbps (ADSL2+) unbundled broadband solutions too.

UK ISP Be Broadband ( O2 ) has become a key sponsor for Heaven Media's 700m2 Game Zone event, which will be hosted at Gadget Show Live in the Birmingham NEC between 17th and 19th April 2009. The Internet provider will be giving away £5,000 worth of prizes at the event.

UK ISP PlusNet has added yet another additional 155mbps segment of central broadband ADSL bandwidth capacity to its network. Customers connecting to the new segment will access the Internet through the gateway known as pcl-ag03. As usual this will allow the provider to keep up with growing demand and to better support its new range of forthcoming up to 24Mbps (ADSL2+) products.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VM) has begun informing its existing customers about a raft of price adjustments to their current phone, broadband and TV services that will take effect from 1st May 2009. Some of the worst hit will be the providers existing M broadband package users, who will have to stump up for an extra £2 per month. However the majority of prices will remain unchanged.

KCOM, BSkyB, Orange, TalkTalk, Three (3), UK Music, Virgin Media and the ISPA are just some of those that have sent in their feedback to the report.

The latest 12,000 user strong survey from uSwitch has revealed that a staggering 42% (6.3 million) of UK broadband consumers are not satisfied with the service they receive. This is despite speeds becoming an estimated 18% faster (from 3.6Mbps to 4.2Mbps) and bills 5% lower (from £15.27 to £14.55 per month) over the same period one year ago. The total annual UK spend on broadband ISP services also hit a staggering £2.6bn!

Mobile provider and ISP Orange UK (France Telecom) looks set to become the first operator to bundle subsidised Apple Macbook laptops with its Mobile Broadband product and services. Mobile Today reports that the deal is currently still being finalised but should be completed in time for a new raft of summer products.

i3 Group's (formerly H2O Networks) Fibrecity project has officially connected the first 50 homes in the UK south coast town of Bournemouth to its next generation up to 100Mbps fibre optic ( FTTH ) broadband network. The group is now known to be targeting a nationwide rollout figure of no less than 2,000 homes per week and more once additional fibre cities come on tap (e.g. Dundee).

The European Commission (EC) has released its latest progress report on the various member states and their telecoms markets. It reveals that the price of broadband has, on average, fallen by 19% from €38.2 (£35.44) per month in 2007 to €31 (£28.74) in 2008 for speeds of between 1 to 2Mbps. Some 75% of EU consumers now have a connection of 2Mbps or more.

Research firm Point Topic has released its latest World Broadband Statistics Report for the fourth quarter of 2008, highlighting a worldwide growth in broadband ISP subscribers of 3.47% between Q3 and Q4 2008. This represents a decrease in broadband growth over the Q2 to Q3 period, which grew by 4.15% (total 398m).

Industry regulator Ofcom has released a new chart showing the complaint trends of the top six most complained about issues over the last 12 months. Sadly broadband migration problems take up two of the places for different reasons, though they have been decreasing in frequency since last spring.
