The Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) was first established in 1995 and is today the UK's primary voluntary trade association for providers of Internet services. The ISPA’s primary job is to promote competition, self-regulation and the development of the Internet industry. Presently the organisation is home to more than 200 UK companies, giving it a significant voice in the industry.

UK Hambleden Valley (Oxfordshire) resident and chairman of BT , Sir Michael Rake , has finally received a 1Mbps broadband connection to his home after first moving into the "not spot" location just one year ago. It should be good news but instead BT has stumbled onto a PR disaster after it emerged that his local neighbours were not being afforded the same privilege.. yet.

Broadband ISP PlusNet ( BT ) has said "sorry" to customers for "the continued broadband speed and performance issues" that have been hampering its service over the past few weeks. The problems were then compounded by a major gateway hardware failure that occurred during the early hours of Friday morning.

Fears that the UK government’s new Digital Economy Bill could destroy FREE public wireless (Wi-Fi) broadband services appear to have come one step closer today. Wi-Fi operator The Cloud informs that a pub owner running one of its open Wi-Fi Hotspots has been fined £8,000 after an unknown customer used the service to download illegal files.

ISP Be Broadband has launched a new referral scheme - Spread the Love - that allows existing customers to recommend the service to their friends and receive a reward of £30 credit for every new member they get to sign-up. Members will receive an extra £30 (a total of £210) if six friends join on their recommendation, equivalent to a free year on the 24Mbps BE Unlimited package.

The latest survey of over 2000 British adults by Moneysupermarket has revealed that 9% admitted to using a wireless ( Wi-Fi ) network without the owner’s permission in the last 12 months. Furthermore 47% of broadband ISP consumers now have a wireless network at home but many fail to secure it, which could lead to hijackers making unlawful use of such connections for illegal downloading or other malicious acts.

Customers of Vodafone UK will not be charged for any mobile Internet usage made via their mobile phones today. The operator is running another of its 'Free Mobile Internet Friday' promotions, which is available regardless of whether you're a pay as you go (payg) or a pay monthly customer on a consumer price plan. And if you have a mobile Internet bundle, the data you use today will not count towards your monthly allowance.

Wireless Hotspot broadband ISP BTOpenzone has made it so that visitors to Macdonald Hotels and Resorts across the UK can now gain Wi-Fi Internet access via its service. Wi-Fi will be available in public areas and over 4500 bedrooms by the end of 2009. BT FON (Wi-Fi Sharing) and O2 iPhone customers with included Wi-Fi minutes in their contracts will also be able to use the system.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK looks set to be the guinea pig for Detica's new CView system, which is designed to measure copyright infringement on an Internet provider’s network via use of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology. Virgin Media has agreed to trial the solution as part of the technological platform for its planned music service.

The government's plan to impose a £0.50p tax on all fixed phone lines (Next Generation Fund) to help fund the rollout of next generation broadband services around the UK will also be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT). Assuming the rate returns to 17.5% at the start of next year then this would push the tax up from 50p to 58.75p per line.

Solicitors at ACS:Law have been granted approval by the Royal Courts of Justice in London to demand the private personal details of some 30,000 customers from UK broadband ISPs (i.e. Norwich Pharmacal Order). The customers concerned are "suspected" of involvement with the illegal file sharing (P2P) of approximately 291 movie titles, they now face threatening demands for money (settlement) or risk the prospect of court action. It's noted that 25,000 of the IP addresses that have been collected belong to BT users.

Comparison site BroadbandGenie.co.uk has analysed the results from 3600 anecdotal speed tests to reveal that the average UK Mobile Broadband speed is just 0.87Mbps, falling well below the rates of 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps advertised by most mobile operators. Shockingly just 16 (0.5%) people managed a speed of more than 3Mbps!

UK Mobile Broadband services might not be the fastest or most reliable method of getting an Internet connection but they could become safe havens for illegal file sharing pirates due to a problem with identification. But plans to warn and eventually disconnect "suspected" abusers from their ISPs will still apply to mobile operators.

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is one example of a pre-existing benchmark for measuring customer service that could be adopted by business ISPs.

Thales UK and Digital Region have announced the 'Go-live' of their superfast £90m Digital Region broadband network in South Yorkshire. Some 97% of businesses and homes in the region will be able to connect to Thales’s network, boasting guaranteed speeds of 25Mbps and above. The first residents and businesses could be using the service by early 2010.

The seaside town of Bournemouth in Dorset has come top of a new survey into the fastest ten towns and cities in the UK for broadband services. The city, which is also host to a new 100Mbps FTTH fibre optic broadband network being built by i3 Group ( H2O Networks ), achieved an average download speed of 8.06Mbps. This is almost double Ofcom's overall July 2009 national UK average speed of 4.1Mbps.
