Internet and phone provider PlusNet Business has today refreshed its range of business focused broadband and phone packages and introduced a new offer of 6 months half price (only applicable with the 24 month contract option). A new superfast up to 76Mbps Business Fibre (FTTC) product has also been added.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a direct mailing advert for BT’s Total Broadband service after a consumer complained that the promotion was misleading because it failed to state that a monthly usage allowance of 10GB applied to the package.

The UK governments Valuation Office Agency (VOA) has once again caused operators of fixed wireless broadband ISPs to fear for their future after it began a review of the rating system for related networks, which could result in the telecoms infrastructure of some providers being hit by additional charges (business rates).

Network specialist Ciena and BT claim to have conducted the “world’s first” successful trials of 800G Super-Channel technology using the operators optical core network infrastructure in the United Kingdom, which delivered “Terabit-rate speeds” over a 410km link between their Adastral Park facility in Ipswich and the BTTower in London.

BT, Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media have all now confirmed that they plan to join TalkTalk (HomeSafe) in launching an automatic network level filtering service in the UK, which would block access to websites that contain “adult” content.

The Staffordshire County Council (SCC) has today signed a new state aid supported £27.3 million deal with BT to help 97% of local homes and businesses gain access to a fibre optic (FTTC/P) based broadband connection by Spring 2016 (95% will get superfast speeds of 25Mbps+).

Cable operator Virgin Media Business has detailed its new £49 million backhaul network capacity deal with BSkyB (Sky Broadband). Under the agreement Virgin will connect around a third of Sky’s unbundled (LLU) local UK telephone exchanges with Sky’s own wholly owned nationwide broadband network.

The Tuesday night launch of Microsoft’s new XBox One console triggered a “big spike” in UK internet traffic as people tuned-in to the various live video streams and websites. Traffic on one of the Content Delivery Networks within TalkTalk’s infrastructure rose from 80Gbps (Gigabits per second) to 120Gbps and the same was true of other ISPs.

ISP LN Communications has expanded the reach of its 50Mbps (Megabits per second) capable fixed wireless broadband network to cover around 700 residents of Stathern Village in Leicestershire (England). Villages within the Vale of Belvoir are next on the list to receive the service.

Urban ISP Hyperoptic, which offers “hyper-sonic” FTTH/B based broadband speeds of up to 1000Mbps (Megabits) to 20,000 homes in London (i.e. high-rise buildings and apartment blocks), has secured a new investment of £50m to help expand into 10 new UK cities by the end of 2014 (80,000 homes).

A Policy and Resources committee meeting of the Dumfries and Galloway Council in Scotland has confirmed that the local authority will commit £12.6 million to help make superfast broadband ISP connectivity available to 85% of local premises by 2015.
