Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has today confirmed a significant ramping-up of their UK “Fibre First” rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which will now aim to cover 4 million homes and businesses by March 2021 (up from 3m) and an ambition for 15 million by around 2025 (up from 10m).

A new UK Community Interest Company (CIC) called Pure Fibre Housing, which is part of the new i4 Technology Group that also encompasses commercial operator British Fibre Networks, has announced that it’s deploying 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband to two new build home developments in North Wales.

The national UK telecoms regulator has today published their 2019 study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average download rate has risen from 46.2Mbps last year to 54.2Mbps now and uploads hit 7.2Mbps (up from 6.2Mbps). But the gap between urban and rural areas has worsened.

Some customers of the Tesco Mobile network appear to be flooding the operator’s Twitter feed with complaints about a loss of 4G and 3G based data (mobile broadband) connectivity, which appears to have started more than 24 hours ago and remains on-going today.

Hampshire-based telecoms and broadband provider Onecom has announced that they’ve successfully secured a five-year funding deal worth £30 million from HSBC UK. According to the ISP, this extra money will enable them to “invest heavily” in both their “systems and teams.“

New UK ISP toob, which was only recently setup by several of Vodafone’s former directors (here) and soon after secured an investment of £75m (here), has announced that the south coast city of Southampton (Hampshire) will be the first to benefit from their rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which last year secured public funding of £23.8m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, has now issued a related £32m tender to help build a new 450km long Gigabit speed “full fibre” network to serve 1,300 public sector sites.

Openreach (BT) has called on Scottish property developers to ensure they adopt “full fibre” ultrafast broadband ISP technology, which comes after it claimed that around 3,000 new properties a year (roughly 13% of the total across Scotland) are “currently missing out” on deploying their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP).

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has posted their latest results for the first quarter of 2019, which saw their UK cable broadband and TV network grow its coverage by another 102,000 premises and their total internet access base add +35,000 new customers to total 5,259,600 (up from the 21.7k added in Q4 2018).

The new CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, is reportedly preparing to announce a major ramping up of Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology next week, which one analyst firm believes could see them target 15 million premises by around 2025 instead of 10 million.

Openreach (BT) has faced criticism after the operator quoted a sparse community £22,695 to bring their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology to just 5 remote rural homes around Morton Farm, which is south of Tayport in Fife (Scotland).

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has begun contacting existing customers of their fixed line home broadband and phone packages in order to inform them of a price hike, which will see some but not all of their related packages increasing by an “average” of +£2 extra per month.

Out-of-contract customers with budget ISP TalkTalk, specifically those who take either their “Fast Broadband” (ADSL) or “Faster Fibre” (FTTC / VDSL2) and phone line packages, have been told by the provider that their post contract prices will be hiked by up to £3 extra per month.

UK ISP BT has today effectively extended the “speed guarantee” on their ultrafast broadband (FTTP and G.fast) packages to the rest of their slower ADSL and FTTC (VDSL2) based services. The new “Stay Fast Guarantee” will see them trying to correct a fault with speeds and then giving £20 back (up to 4 times a year) if they fail.
