Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today added 12 new places (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which also includes a few corrections due to past errors and a larger build on the Isle of Wight. Some 8 million premises are now covered.

London-focused broadband ISP G.Network has today become the latest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network builder in the UK to sign the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC), which reflects a pledge to recognise the contribution of serving personnel, both regular and reservists, veterans and military families – often as part of recruitment.

Mobile operator Three UK has revealed that their ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has gone live in 86 new locations since the start of this year, including rural and coastal “staycation” locations like Dartmouth, Milford on Sea, Aberystwyth, Holywood and Irvine.

Multiple newspaper reports are this afternoon claiming that mobile and broadband giant Virgin Media (VMO2) is in early talks to merge with low-cost conscious UK ISP TalkTalk and take on its fixed line customer base of 4.2 million (VMO2 is home to 5.6 million). The proposed deal is said to value the company at around £3bn.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has this afternoon formally served notice for strike action against UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT (inc. Openreach), which will take place on Friday 29th July and Monday 1st August 2022. Up to around 38,000 workers could potentially go on strike, although exact figures may be less.

UK ISP FACTCO has today finished its rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to the rural village of Cambois, which they claim is the “largest completed [gigabit voucher] project to date” in Northumberland (England).

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today “dismissed” CityFibre’s attempt to challenge Ofcom’s approval of Openreach’s (BT) “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) at wholesale to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs. But the operator is far from giving up.

City-focused gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today announced a key milestone after their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network connected over 100,000 new build UK homes, with agreements in place to connect a further 100,000 new build properties over the next 12-months. The operator has now covered a total of over 900,000 premises.

The endless debate over the UK government’s bloated and incoherent Online Safety Bill (OSB) took another twist today after the Open Rights Group (ORG) pointed out that two of the largest broadband ISPs, Virgin Media (VMO2) and TalkTalk, were blocking access to MP Penny Mordaunt’s website as “unsuitable for children“.
