Hampshire-based alternative network toob, which has built their own gigabit speed full fibre broadband network in South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other UK areas, has today announced a “successful follow-on investment” into the company by Ares Infrastructure Debt strategy. But the exact financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

The Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) in England has launched a new pilot project that aims to address rural broadband “not spots” across the agricultural sector by helping farms deploy Starlink’s satellite based broadband service. If found to be successful, the initiative could be rolled out “across the county” to farms where fibre-based solutions are unlikely to be delivered in the near future.

Eutelsat has revealed that they’ve purchased an additional 229 satellites for OneWeb’s constellation of ultrafast broadband spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is in addition to the 440 already procured from Airbus. A total of 669 new satellites have now been procured and they’ve also chosen Arianespace to help launch some of these in 2027 and 2028.

The owners of UK broadband, mobile and TV provider Virgin Media (O2), Telefónica and Liberty Global, are reportedly set to move forward with earlier proposals for a significant round of cost-cutting (i.e. a mix of job cuts and reducing capital expenditure) and are reportedly aiming to calm investors by cutting c.£600m.

Two years have passed since UK fixed broadband and phone providers began using Ofcom’s new One Touch Switch (OTS) process, which was designed to make it easier and quicker to change ISP. The latest data supplied to ISPreview shows that 3,481,323 consumers have now switched provider using this process (up from 1.62m in the first year).

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is responsible for examining the value for money of UK Government projects, is this morning expected to find that water, energy and broadband regulators (e.g. Ofcom) are not doing enough to support vulnerable customers, and will call on them to act more urgently to ensure people get the standard of service they deserve.
