BT Signs Superfast Broadband Extension Contract for Leicestershire UK

The Leicestershire County Council in central England and national telecoms operator BT have today signed a £9.2 million extension of their existing Broadband Delivery UK contract, which will enabled more than 10,000 extra homes and businesses to access a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by the end of 2018.

Rural Norfolk Village Complains of BT’s Falling Broadband Speeds

Representatives of a small rural village in East Norfolk (England), Wiveton, have spoken to ISPreview.co.uk about their frustration after local broadband download speeds collapsed from around 6Mbps at Christmas to less than 2Mbps now. Some are even suffering speeds as low as 39Kbps and this includes a few living just yards from the exchange.

The Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire (England) has started a new pilot project, which is being funded with £1.5m from the local New Homes Bonus pot and aims to roll-out a superfast broadband (30Mbps) network across the rural villages of North Marston, Granborough and Hogshaw (more could follow).

Free Public WiFi Might Tempt Consumers to Switch 4G Mobile Operator

A new Arqiva commissioned survey of 2,000 UK residents has explored how consumers perceive public WiFi services vs 3G and 4G cellular network connectivity. The study found that almost two thirds (58%) of 4G subscribers would consider swapping to a different network provider if they supplied public WiFi access as part of their subscription package.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that a new project, which is being funded by £58,500 from Community Broadband Scotland (CBS), Perth and Kinross Council and the Griffin Windfarm Fund, will imminently help to connect several rural villages that circle Tay Forest Park (Amulree, Trochry and Struan) to a new fixed wireless broadband network.

UK ISP Internet Piracy Website Blocks Expand to Proxy Server Link Sites

POST Tells UK Government – You Can’t Easily BAN Internet Anonymity

The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) has published an interesting new note that examines Internet anonymity technologies, such as TOR and the so-called “DarkNet” websites (e.g. SilkRoad), which can be used to support freedom of expression by circumventing censorship and yet also act as a tool that is exploitable by trolls, criminals and terrorists.

A new study from uSwitch.com, which is based on data gathered via 1,030,865 consumer Internet speedtests conducted between August 2014 to February 2015, claims to have revealed that the slowest street in the United Kingdom for average broadband download speed is Williamson Road (Kent) at 0.53Mbps, while the fastest was Sandy Lane in Staffordshire on 72.86Mbps.

Vodafone UK Eye Summer Launch for Wi-Fi Calling and 4G VoLTE

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the commercial launch of their new Wi-Fi Calling service and separate Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, which allows their new 4G network to carry “crystal clear” voice calls, should both be deployed this coming summer.

Budget ISP Direct Save Telecom has resuscitated their ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Pro” (FTTC) broadband package, which had previously vanished from sale. Apparently the provider has since been “flooded with enquiries” about the service and has thus made it available again.
