Hyperoptic, an independent provider that is deploying 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband networks across several cities in the United Kingdom and which already reaches 100,000 premises, has today refreshed their brand identify, launched a new website and introduced a revised range of packages and prices for home users.

We don’t usually cover singular voucher promotions, but cable operator Virgin Media has done a slightly new twist. Virgin, on top of their existing price discounts, are now giving new subscribers a voucher reward worth between £50 and £100, with customers choosing whether it’s usable with John Lewis, iTunes, Amazon or M&S.

The recent discussion over whether broadband should be added to a legally binding Universal Service Obligation has prompted us to conduct a survey, which found that out of 1,445 respondents some 71.5% supported the idea of imposing a USO on BT (or KC in Hull) to deliver fixed line broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps to all.

The revolving door of ISP discounts continues today as TalkTalk have reintroduced their 12 months free unlimited Simply Broadband deal (normal price of £3.50 per month), which must also be taken alongside their phone line rental from £16.70 a month or the equivalent of only £15.03 a month when pre-paid. A £75 Love2shop voucher is included.

The Stockton-On-Tees (North East England) based business ISP Onyx Group, which recently gobbled Knowledge IT for £10 million, has announced that its core infrastructure will be upgraded to 10Gb through a new investment of £1 million.

The central Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK project, which is working with BT to deploy superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity services across the United Kingdom, has just published the programmes latest take-up figures for December 2014. Adoption is rising rapidly and several more projects have now broken the 20% threshold.

The Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has warned critics of BT’s dominance in the national Broadband Delivery UK programme that the operator could have simply opted for the “quiet life” by not bidding for any contracts. The minister also floated the idea of ISPs offering different broadband packages for areas that suffer from slow speeds.

BT has announced that it plans to create 1,000 new apprenticeships and graduate jobs during 2015/16 for fields such as software development, IT, engineering (Openreach) and digital technology.

Israel-based semiconductor company Sckipio has suggested that BT’s future deployment of G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband (here), which from 2016/17 aims to make speeds of 500Mbps available to “most homes“, could be fuelled in urban areas by millimeter Wave (mmW) wireless technology connected to distribution points (i.e. instead of fibre optic cable).

The Council of the EU, which represents the governments of Europe’s member states (e.g. UK, France, Italy etc.), has put a spanner in the works of long held plans to end mobile roaming charges and safeguard open Internet access (Net Neutrality) by attempting to water down the proposed rules for a new Single Telecoms Market.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced that the work to expand the reach of their cable broadband, TV and phone network to 100,000 extra homes in East London has officially reached the half-way point (50,000 completed), which is now benefitting residents in East Ham, Stratford, Bow, Poplar and Stepney.

The Devon (Tiverton and Honiton) MP, Neil Parish, will this afternoon (2:30pm) host yet another live streamed debate at Westminster Hall on the management and delivery of faster broadband connectivity to remote rural areas. Parish will be flanked by fellow Conservative MP Richard Bacon and Liberal Democrat MP Tessa Munt.

A group of residents in the Somerset village of Priddy have expressed displeasure at the Government’s attempt to fix the community’s broadband “slow spots” by spending public money on a new Satellite Internet service, which locals complain is too limited, expensive to run and is not up to the task of catering for business demands.

Ofcom’s latest ‘Telecoms Market Data Tables’ update for Q3-2014 has reported that the United Kingdom is now home to a total of 23,411,000 fixed line residential and small business broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up by 192,000 in the quarter (better than the 179,000 added in Q2 2014).

The UK communications regulator has today announced that their new harmonised broadband ISP and phone switching process (GPL NoT+) is to be expanded to include operators that offer similar services via KC’s (KCOM) incumbent telecoms network in and around Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire, England).
