The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed some more details about the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN), which aims to extend UK geographic 4G mobile coverage to 95% by the end of 2025, and explained how they will assess the compliance of O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) with those commitments.

Broadband ISP WightFibre, which is currently investing £35m to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network on the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire), has now passed a total of 20,000 premises (15,000 of those are live) in their on-going build programme.

Customers of Virgin Mobile UK (Virgin Media) – specifically their Pay Monthly subscribers – are being given unlimited minutes to landlines and other mobile numbers, plus a 10GB data boost (Mobile Broadband), at no extra cost, for a month, in order to help them with the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation.

A website and YouTube advert for O2 UK’s custom plans (refresh campaign – the ability to upgrade your phone at any time) have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following complaints from rivals Three UK and Virgin Media, which said that some of their comparisons were “misleading.”

Complaints from UK broadband ISPs Virgin Media, Vodafone and 11 people have resulted in several adverts for BT’s Complete WiFi (mesh system) service add-on being banned for misleadingly claiming that “only we guarantee wi-fi in every room” and “we guarantee a strong signal in every room.”

Some early feedback from Openreach’s (BT) latest trial of ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband ISP lines, specifically those using the operator’s UK estate of ECI street cabinets, has shown improvements in service speed and latency times (ping).

Sky Talk), Sky Mobile and Sky TV are set to be given a number of free extras in order to help them through the current period of self-isolation, which is gradually being implemented across the United Kingdom in order to help tackle the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Customers of O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK – as well as various virtual (MVNO) mobile providers – are today reporting sporadic connectivity problems with making calls, which began at just after 10am today. Some reports have claimed that this issue allegedly stems from an interconnect fault on O2’s network.

A decision by Universal Pictures (NBCUniversal) means that, as part of their response to the new Coronavirus (COVID-19), Sky UK (ISP Sky Broadband) will join Comcast in the USA, and a “variety of on-demand services,” to release new films at the same time as they become available in the cinema.

As expected Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that their planned trial with O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) of a new 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network along the Jubilee Line (platforms and tube trains in tunnels) – between Canning Town and Westminster stations – will go live tomorrow.

The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has today unveiled new legislation, which will effectively make it mandatory for property developers to ensure that almost every new home is built with support for “gigabit-speed” (1Gbps) broadband ISP connections “fit for the future.“

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has officially chosen UK ISP Virgin Media to deliver on their Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) project, which aims to deploy “up to” 2,700km of new Gigabit speed fibre network to serve 1,700 public sector sites across the city-region (up from the 1,300 originally proposed).

Broadband ISP BT has kindly decided to open up the remote record functionality within their TV app so that all users with a UK YouView (IPTV) set-top-box, even if they don’t have a Pay TV subscription with the operator, can access it once support for YouView’s own app is removed at the end of March 2020.

Mobile operator O2 has today signed a new deal that will make them the “exclusive UK mobile [network] distributor” of the Disney+ video streaming service, which is due to launch this side of the pond on 24th March. New and upgrading Pay Monthly customers will be able to select 6 months free Disney+ when they purchase online.

The bosses of several other UK broadband ISPs and organisations, including Gigaclear, Cityfibre and Openreach among others, have now gone into self-isolation at home for at least 7 days after meeting the CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, last week. Initially it was thought that this only effected the chiefs of major mobile operators.

Customers of Vodafone’s mobile network are being informed that they will not be charged for any data (mobile broadband) consumed while visiting or using websites and online services for the National Health Services (NHS), which they said includes subscribers to VOXI and TalkMobile.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers Association, which represents the UK VoIP phone industry, has today revealed their shortlist of finalists for their annual 2020 ITSPA Awards event, although given the rising industry focus on domestic IP voice alternatives it’s frustrating to see that there’s no consumer category.
