Some customers of Zen Internet’s broadband and Ethernet services, particularly those whose connections terminate in London, are this morning suffering from some unusual internet connectivity problems, which means that your line may be live but a few popular online services (e.g. web browsing) will not be fully functional.

Gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today announced the introduction of a new “Hyperhub” router, the Nokia HA-140W-B, which promises a peak theoretical combined WiFi speed of 2.92Gbps but will only be available to new customers who take out one of their top 500Mbps of 1Gbps full fibre (FTTP/B) packages.

Some of Sky Broadband’s UK ISP customers, mostly those with one of their latest Sky Hub routers (SR203), are being faced with an intermittent bug that results in the WiFi connection giving an “access point temporarily full” message and disrupting local connectivity, even though the router is well below its device limit.

The Government’s £1.8bn Building Digital UK project has now helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24-30Mbps+) ISP networks to 5,293,139 extra premises since 2012 (up by 62,665 over the past 6 months) – about 390,000 of these are FTTP – and the latest take-up data to June 2020 reveals strong demand.

PC Pro has released the results of their annual 2020 Excellence Awards, which saw Tesco Mobile being named as the “Best Mobile Data Provider” and fixed line provider Zen Internet once again picking up a 17th consecutive win for the “Best Broadband ISP” category. Zen also scooped the “Best Web Host” category.

Thousands of UK new build homes across parts of the “Northern PowerHouse” region look set to gain access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, thanks to a new partnership between residential managed ISP ClearFibre (Telcom) and commercial connectivity provider Connectus.

After a bit of a delay it appears as if rural UK ISP Gigaclear is finally starting to make some solid progress on their state aid supported contract in East Berkshire, which over the last nine months has laid 55km of new fibre to help cover 4,300 premises with their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that Pay Monthly customers of their 4G and 5G network can now benefit from a selection of two optional new international calling add-ons, which cost from just £5 extra per month and make it cheaper to call people in 55 other countries.

The UK Government’s Digital Minister, Matt Warman, has called on Ofcom and BT to find a “resolution” to the situation with the new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which results in some homes being quoted tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds to get a 10Mbps+ capable ISP connection.

Infrastructure firm Magdalene (M Group Services) has secured another contract with Mobile Broadband Network Ltd, which will see them support Three UK’s new 5G focused Unilateral Street Works Build (USWB) programme. The firm is already supporting MBNLs Notice to Quit (NTQ) and Towers & Antennas (T&A) operations.

Residents, visitors and businesses in the Huntingdonshire market towns of St Neots, St Ives, Ramsey and Huntingdon are in the process of gaining access to a free public WiFi network (CambWiFi), which is being delivered as part of the wider Connecting Cambridgeshire programme.

Broadband provider TalkTalk has today announced that they have received a preliminary and non-binding takeover proposal from Toscafund Asset Management (TAM), which intends to pay 97p for every share (valuing the deal at around £1.1bn). The new owner, if successful, would seek to take the ISP private.

Ofcom and crowdsourced benchmark firm umlaut have examined a sample size of 200,000 Android using UK mobile users between January and April 2020 to identify key trends. For example, people were connected to 4G for 82% of the time in urban areas, but only 76% in rural ones (most of the rest was spent on 3G).

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) will next Tuesday vote on a key decision to award the contract for Phase 4 of their Superfast Broadband North Yorkshire (SFNY) project, which is worth £12.5m and predicted to push local “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage up to 97% (currently 92%).

Mobile operator Three UK has today signed another fibre optic capacity deal, this time with Colt Technology Services, in order to help fuel their latest 5G and existing 4G based (mobile broadband) network. The deal will see Colt become a “preferred provider of fibre backhaul connectivity” for the operator.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today expanded their existing Sky Q TV platform support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture quality by enabling it on the popular Netflix video streaming service. Admittedly if you have a modern internet-connected HDR TV then you can probably already get this via the streaming giants own app.
