RootMetrics Test 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds in 4 UK Cities

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new report that examines the mobile broadband download speeds and availability of 5G networks across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK in four recently tested cities during the first half of 2021 – Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, and London.

The Scottish Government‘s (SG) 4G Infill Programme (S4GI), which via WHP Telecoms aims to improve rural mobile voice and broadband coverage by building new mast sites (mostly tackling notspots across the Highlands and Islands), has been given a £3.75m boost to construct a further 12 masts.

Mobile operator Three UK has today issued a progress update on their various 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network upgrades, which among other things reveals that they’ve now added their 1400MHz band to boost 4G speeds to over 1900 sites and have introduced a new anti-SPAM filter to protect text (SMS) messaging.

Vodafone UK Tops 911,000 Fixed Broadband ISP Customers

The latest first quarter 2021 results (financial Q4 FY21) from ISP and mobile giant Vodafone UK have today been published, which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +35,000 customers (vs +38k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 911,000. But their mobile base fell to 17,253,000.

EE UK Boosts 4G Mobile Coverage Across London’s Rail Network UPDATE

Mobile network operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has today confirmed that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband platform has now gone live across parts of a further 30 UK towns and cities, which takes the total list of live locations to 183.

BT Raises FTTP Broadband Target to 25 Million UK Premises

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

Ericsson Survey Finds Confused Demand for 5G Mobile in the UK

A new survey from Ericsson, which makes 5G networking kit and services for mobile network operators, has found that the number of UK consumers intending to upgrade to 5G has decreased to 25% (down from 27% in 2019) and others remain confused about what the technology will deliver.

Broadband and 5G Boost as Network Rail Plan GBP1bn Cable Auction

Network Rail, which is responsible for running Britain’s railways, has revealed they will auction off 10,000 miles worth of their old trackside cable network (much of this still runs off legacy copper lines and is in need of an upgrade). iD Mobile UK Start Making Ultrafast 5G Available at No Extra Cost

New Government Changes to Boost 5G Mobile Cover in England

The Government has today begun a consultation on their proposed changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which seeks to extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres and softening planning permission).
