The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to grant Code Powers to Wifinity Limited that would allow the operator to carry out street works as part of their wider effort to roll-out a new symmetric 4Mbps, 10Mbps and 20Mbps (Megabits per second) capable wireless broadband service for domestic users.

Some of Virgin Media’s cable broadband customers have been left unable to access a number of popular websites (e.g. Stack Overflow) for approximately two weeks due to the ISPs apparent lack of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with “the network where we think the issue is” (i.e. Internap).

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that UK broadcasters, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, have the right to block retransmission of free-to-air TV (e.g. Freeview) programming over the Internet unless the related service (e.g. TVCatchup Ltd) gains specific permission. But they haven’t won yet.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released a new study into online copyright infringement (internet piracy), which estimates that 16% of UK internet users aged 12+ have consumed at least one item of online content illegally between August-October 2012 and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

BT has confirmed that £3.7m from the £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme will be used to divert an undersea fibre optic cable, which has rested “unused … for about three years” on the seabed, to help bring faster broadband ISP connectivity to the Isles of Scilly and surrounding islands.

The CTO and Co-Founder of business ISP Timico UK, Trefor Davies, has called for a “total network rollout” of true fibre optic broadband (FTTP) services after highlighting how corrosion on his copper BT telecoms line had caused a recently installed FTTC service to drop from an average speed of 53Mbps to just 6Mbps (Megabits).
