Mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which is powered by an MVNO agreement with O2’s national network, has joined the bandwagon of Black Friday discounts by reducing the price of their two 4G based unlimited data (mobile broadband) plans by 50% for the first six months of service (available to order until midnight on 30th November 2021).

CityFibre has today announced that they’ve committed £21 million to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to homes and businesses in the Lincolnshire (England) city of Lincoln, which is home to a total population of around 95,000 (including the borough area).

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is the virtual operator sibling of Vodafone UK, has today begun offering customers the option of buying a cheaper “refurbished” smartphone alongside bundles with their various 4G and 5G capable mobile (mobile broadband) plans. The move will save consumers money and reduce electronic waste.

Alternative UK ISP Swish Fibre has continued their “fake fibre” related advertising feud with BT today after they lodged a retaliatory complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which objected to the “confusing” use of the term “fibre broadband” in the incumbents marketing for their “part-fibre” (FTTC) products.

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that the telecoms industry has gone from last year’s report, when spending on research and development grew by just 0.95% to total £956m, to this year when such spending has risen by 4.5% (£44m) to reach a 9-year high of £1.028bn.

The UK Court of Appeal (CoA) has granted broadband ISP BT permission to try to appeal the Competition Appeals Tribunal‘s (CAT) judgement, which last month rejected the operator’s attempt to stop a £600m class action claim against them – related to the alleged overcharging of 2.3 million landline-only phone customers.

Low-cost UK ISP TalkTalk appears to have quietly launched a new “Fibre 1Gbps” broadband service as part of their CityFibre and Openreach based Future Fibre packages, but at present it only seems to be available in Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) areas (CF areas are still limited to 500Mbps) and costs just £49.
