The boss of full fibre broadband operator Netomnia and ISP YouFibre, Jeremy Chelot, has today been voted as the Network Representative for the Board of the One Touch Switching Company, which is responsible for implementing Ofcom’s OTS (One Touch Switch) solution for faster consumer switching between UK ISPs.

Following a “productive meeting” with KCOM yesterday, alternative UK broadband ISP Connexin has announced that they will “temporarily pause” the deployment of new telecoms poles in parts of Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire (England) as they “explore the viability” of the incumbents recent infrastructure sharing offer.

Trade body Mobile UK, which represents network operators Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone, has today published a new report that warns “widespread adoption of 5G [is] at risk of being missed” unless the government makes changes to help deliver 5G (mobile broadband) upgrades.

Hampshire-based network builder and gigabit broadband ISP toob, which is rolling out their own full fibre (FTTP) network and also sharing some of CityFibre’s similar infrastructure in parts of South England, has today announced that they’re extending their own network near Fareham into the nearby Locks Heath area.

Low-cost focused UK broadband ISP Plusnet (BT Group), which seems to have spent the past few years scrapping many of its extra features (TV, Mobile etc.), has perhaps unsurprisingly now confirmed that it will no longer offer home phone services to existing customers once analogue (PSTN/WLR) services are switched off by BT and Openreach.

EE) has today introduced their new “clear and simple” pricing policy, which sees them move away from % figures and CPI (inflation)-linked changes for their monthly plans in order to “provide certainty for our customers on exactly what their price change will be, and when“.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has just deployed the first of 7 new masts in rural parts of Stirling (Scotland) to help boost local 4G (mobile broadband) coverage under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme. The first site, in the remote village of Killin, required a helicopter to deliver the new mast to its site.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has released their April 2024 (spring) progress update on the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which is so far running 37 live contracts and procurements worth £1.9bn in state aid (£1.38bn for 31 signed contracts) to help extend coverage up to an extra 1 million hard to reach premises.

The UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the £44m (state aid) regional contract for South Yorkshire (Lot 20) in England to ISP Quickline, which will aim to extend their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network to as many as 32,100 additional premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The Government has this morning announced a mass of additional contract awards under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout programme, which includes builds for West Herefordshire and the Forest of Dean, the Peak District, Dorset and South Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and finally, Mid West Shropshire.

Internet connection speed benchmarking firm nPerf has today announced the launch of a new app for PC and MAC users, which is said to be capable of testing broadband speeds of up to 10Gbps, with streaming (using the VLC enginer) and browsing tests (using Chromium) now also included. The latter is rare for general speed testers.

Network builder Freedom Fibre has announced that they’ve begun the build phase of their £24m state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract, which aims to upgrade connectivity for “around” 12,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across rural parts of North Shropshire (Lot 25.02) in England to their full fibre (FTTP) network.

Network operator AllPoints Fibre (APFN / Fern Trading), which is the UK wholesale division of Fern Trading’s recently consolidate alternative FTTP broadband ISP networks (Giganet, Jurassic Fibre, and Swish Fibre), has appointed a new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the form of industry veteran Ronan Kelly.

The first government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades for England have today been completed in the market town of Keswick (Cumbria), which forms part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). A further 82 masts in England are also set for upgrades.
