The UK telecoms regulator has proposed to soften their requirements for licence exempt indoor “mobile phone repeaters” in order to reflect both the introduction of in-vehicle 5G and the withdrawal of older 2G and 3G networks. Most operators (except O2) expect to close 3G by the end of 2024, while both 2G and 3G must be switched-off by 2033 (here).

The ITS Technology Group, which runs 36 wholesale full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks (“Faster Britain“) across urban parts of the UK for businesses and ISPs to harness, has today announced that they’ve secured £100m of debt financing from global investment firm Avenue Capital Group to help support their plans.

Network operator Telcom Group (ClearFibre, WeFibre, HyperCity etc.), which via its UK sub-brands is building various 10Gbps capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet networks across the Midlands and North West of England, has today announced the successful acquisition of fixed wireless and high-speed fibre network provider Luminet.

The government has today adopted new measures, as recommended by the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), to protect the UK’s growing optical fibre cables industry – worth around £88m to the economy – from unfair trading practices from China. As a result, imports will now face new anti-dumping and countervailing measures.

A new report from the cross-party Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has revealed that an estimated 7 million Smart Meters are at risk of losing data connectivity when the old 2G and 3G mobile communications networks are closed by 2033. But the report doesn’t mention Vodafone’s recent deal to help upgrade the old units.

MS3, which is supported by 30 ISPs in its effort to roll out a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across the North of England (here), has announced that their new fibre infrastructure now covers 60,000 premises in Lincolnshire (England) alone and a big chunk of that comes from their Scunthorpe build.

Broadband ISP and network builder Brsk, which is rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the Midlands (rollout plan), has announced that their network is expanding into Cheshire and one of the first locations to start going live is the market town and civil parish of Wilmslow – home to 26,000 people.

Mobile operators Three UK, O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone have reportedly warned the government that the first phase of their £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025, is at risk of being delayed by 2 years.

A new study from Broadband Genie (BG) has analysed 265,000 consumer speed tests and found the top slowest and fastest ten streets for broadband in the UK. For example, Morriston Close in Watford (London) comes out as the slowest street, with an average download speed of 0.6Mbps, but this is only half of the story.
